IMO SENSING MARKET OPPORTUNITY FOR MANGO SALES IN EASTERN EUROPE

By Will Cavan
Executive Director
International Mango Organization (IMO)

imango.org@gmail.com

The beauty of the IMO Blog is that it is run by Google.

The beauty of that is for the first time in its history the IMO has a hands on read of where the viewership is.

All things being equal, viewership cross over the 4,000 mark tomorrow.

What this tells the IMO is that :

A) The Blog is relevant.

B) The tools that Google provide allow the IMO to analyze in "real time" what and where the market is going.

While the viewership remains heavily slanted towards the USA market, there is a trend developing from non traditional markets in eastern Europe and Scandinavia. In particular, Russia, Poland , Hungary continue to register interest in the IMO Blog on a consistent / daily  basis.

Since the IMO credo has always been: "Equal Access to markets", it is our responsibility to report trends when they appear.

MARKET CHATTER: April 07, 2011

By Will Cavan
Executive Director
International Mango Organization (IMO)

April 07, 2011

It has been a few weeks (almost 3) since the last market review.

The disaster created by Peru flooding the market is finally working its way out.

There are several important variables to consider.

1.- frost damage in Mexico decimated the Ataulfo and Manila supply.

This means that the local Mexican market will be looking for an alternative to the hands down favorite Manila variety.

2. Mexico finally has a viable shipping route to Europe with Maersk lines from the port of Veracruz to Europe.

It would be in Mexico's best interest to research this option

2 MILLION DOLLAR INVESTMENT TO ACCOMMODATE DOLE PROCESSED FRUIT OPERATION

Hanson Logistics starts $2 million expansion   Hanson Logistics announced Wednesday a $2 million expansion to its Decatur, Mich., cold storage facility used by Dole Packaged Foods.

Dole Packaged Foods uses the facility to mix frozen California fruit with Michigan fruit to reduce supply chain costs and better serve its customers.

“We’ve had the opportunity to work closely with Dole Packaged Foods during the past several years, and to extend our agreement to 11 years is a great vote of confidence in all Hanson teammates and the Michigan infrastructure,” said Andrew Janson, Hanson’s president.

MAERSK ROUTE TO EUROPE FROM MEXICO WILL SAVE TIME

IMO NOTE: Better late than never....here is the January press release from MAERSK on the aforementioned route to Europe from Mexico.Maersk launches Europe/Mexico service   Maersk said it is launching a direct weekly service between North Europe and the East Coast of Mexico, making the pitch that the absence of an intermediary U.S. port call "will save the exporters hassle of the country’s stringent regulations for customs clearance."
"Maersk Line has no intentions of avoiding the U.S. in general. However, in this case we want to distinct ourselves from our competitors by being a dedicated Mexico service," said Rasmus Hansen, a Maersk spokesman.
"We believe that our customers will benefit from not having to comply with the 24 hours AMS filings, risk of cargo being held back by customs, etc."

WILL THE F.D.A. FOOD SAFETY EXERCISE MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

IMO NOTE: As the food safety issue becomes politicized (Bad Thing) the resulting bureaucracy will only make it harder for shippers to participate. The arena is so cluttered with would be contenders for the "right to be heard" that the most important message will be missed. Here is Jim Prevor's take:
From The Weekly Standard
By Jim Prevor of "Perishable Pundit" fame November 29, 2011
Today, the Senate is likely to vote on the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010 (S510).  But the bill is little more than an enormous grant of money and power to the Food and Drug Administration and a lot of reporting burdens imposed on the private sector. Those who favor a smaller, leaner government should oppose it. Advocates for the bill point out that we need “change” as the food safety system is built mostly on laws passed over seventy years ago. They would like to transform the FDA from what they perceive as a mostly reactive agency – dealing with food safety after outbreaks occur – t…

EXTREME SUSTAINABILITY: ENFIELD AGRO'S FARM

Here's a company that takes pride in its quality organic produce. And for Gomathi Viswanathan, who heads Enfield Agrobase, it's the fulfilment of her husband's dream A great cup of filter coffee leads me to Enfield Agrobase Limited.  I learn their organic coffee powder, sourced from a relatively small estate in Yercaud, is a staple for Chennaiites-in-the-know.  Powerfully aromatic, the coffee is produced in small quantities, and thus never advertised.  Since Enfield Agro does not export its produce, the best quality is sold in the local market.  A market increasingly appreciative of honestly grown organic food.

INDIA : KING ALPHONSO COMES TO TOWN

THANE: The king is in town & the good old alphonso, the king of mangoes has arrived.

And at Rs 1,500 a dozen, it certainly doesn't come cheap. Bargaining will only reduce the cost by a mere Rs 100.

But wait for a month and the prices will reduce, the eager shopkeepers will tell you.

The mangoes have come from Ratnagiri and this year most of the crops have been ruined thanks to the unseasonal showers.

One sniff and you know the aroma is worth bottling.

The fruit, slightly oblong in shape, is golden orange in colour and is the perfect variety for canning.
