FOOD FOR THOUGHT BY MBENDI.COM (THE WORLD BEYOND 2020)

A By weekly update from: MBENDI.COM

Where are we and where is the world going? We need to know in order to plan our own lives and those of the organisations in which we work. Fertility rates are dropping in developed countries, while migration could lead to significant changes in population compositions.  In most countries of the world, life expectancy is increasing, leading to larger populations of retirees who require pension and health benefits to last longer thus placing pressure on private and state social security systems.

Walmart has launched an urgent High Court application in Windhoek challenging the Namibian Competition Commission’s decision to impose local ownership conditions.

The company is also encountering opposition to its entry into the South African market, as is Japan's Kansai.

French bank BNP Paribas is to open an office in Nigeria and boost its South African investment banking presence.

The Carlyle Group also plans to open offices in Johannesburg and Lagos.

New US visa application procedures with lower fees for applicants in South Africa have been introduced.

The IMF and the Government of Kenya held a conference to help improve tax revenue mobilization.

THE MANGO CONTRVERSY: INDIA VERSUS PAKISTAN

MANGO maneuvers

General Zia sent P.M. Indira Gandhi "Anwar Rataul" Mangoes originating from Pakistani orchards.
Mrs. Gandhi returned the favour after finding out that the origin of the Anwar Rataul was actually from Rataul, a garden called Shora-e-Afaq, near Meerut, India.
According to a farmer from that area the story of the Anwar Ratual mango variety is that there were two brothers ; one of them, Anwar, migrated to Pakistan and started the variety Anwar Rataul.
Ironically General Zia’s C-130 plane was reportedly sabotaged by loading the plane with crates of mangoes [concealed with bombs] from Bahawalpur from where the plane took off and crashed soon after.
Recently General Musharraf before going to the Agra Peace summit in 2001 sent Chaunsa mangoesto the Indian leaders - PM and Home Ministers.

CARL LINNAEUS: FATHER OF MODERN TAXONOMY (MANGIFERA INDICA (L))

"Carl Linnaeus (23 May[a 1] 1707 – 10 January 1778), also known after his ennoblement as Carl von Linné(help·info),[1] was a Swedish botanistphysician, and zoologist, who laid the foundations for the modern scheme of binomial nomenclature

He is known as the father of modern taxonomy, and is also considered one of the fathers of modern ecology."

"In the 1740s, he was sent on several journeys through Sweden to find and classify plants and animals. In the 1750s and 60s, he continued to collect and classify animals, plants, and minerals, and published several volumes.

At the time of his death, he was one of the most acclaimed scientists in Europe.

The Swiss philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau sent him the message: "Tell him I know no greater man on earth."[2]
The German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote: "With the exception of Shakespeare and Spinoza, I know no one among the no longer living who has influenced me more …

ABOUT INATURALIST.ORG

IMO NOTE: THIS IS ONE OF THE IMO PARTNERS on our epic mango mapping and tree inventory project:

"iNaturalist.org began as the Master's final project of Nate Agrin, Jessica Kline, and Ken-ichi Ueda at UC Berkeley's School of Information in 2008.

Nate and Ken-ichi continued working on the site, along with Sean McGregor.

Currently Ken-ichi maintains the site in collaboration with Scott Loarie, a climate change researcher at the Carnegie Institution."

MODERN DAY BANGLADESH: THE CHITTAGANG HILL TRACTS

CHITTAGONG HILL TRACTS: THE BIRTH PLACE OF MANGO

SOUTH AFRICA'S WHITE FARMERS ARE BEING "COURTED" BY THE REST OF AFRICA

IMO NOTE: Expect a major redistribution of South Africa's mango farmers and technology:

"The new trek is attracting support from major South African

finance houses such as Standard Bank and investment funds

such as Emergent Asset Management, a UK-South Africa fund

run by former Goldman Sachs high flyer Susan Payne. She

claims to be investing in 14 African countries and promises a

30% annual return."

A VERY COMPLETE NUTRITIONAL BREAK DOWN FOR RAW MANGOES

IMO NOTE: This data only applies to RAW mangoes, not HWT fruit or even irradiated fruit.
The pastuerization process that takes place during Hot Water treatment alters and even destroys the nutritional make up of mangoes as found naturally.
Perhaps the NMB should commission one of their famous studies comparing the effect of  Phyto sanitary protocols on mango.

A before and after analysis.

This would be a real "eye opener" , with perhaps major ramifications for the way mangoes are promoted?!

IMO COOPERATION WITH GOOGLE EARTH AND INATURALIST.ORG

By Will Cavan
Executive Director
International Mango Organization (IMO)
Vista, California

May 1, 2011

The IMO GMCRA (Global Mango crop Reporting Agency) has indertaken a Herculean project of cataloguing the World's Mango trees.

This job would be impossible were it not for technology.

With the help of Google Earth and INaturalist.org, and of course the supporters of the IMO, we will be able to use the world wide web to post pictures, observations and GSP coordinates of mango orchards, down to the specific tree within the orchard and post the history of said tree.
