BUYERS AND SELLERS EAGER TO IMPLEMENT PRODUCE TRACEABILITY INITIATIVE (PTI)

A breakdown of the 79 percent of member companies reporting an overall state of readiness to achieve all PTI milestones by the target completion date of 2012 is as follows: 94 percent of grower/packer/shipper members; 82 percent of retailer members; 71 percent of wholesaler/broker members; and 70 percent of foodservice members.

No systemic issues to implementing the PTI were identified by council members, and working groups are already addressing the implementation challenges that members identified.

“The strong seller and buyer participation in the pilot projects reinforces the commitment to advancing PTI in our industry,” said Leadership Council Chair Cathy Green Burns, president of Food Lion.

“We look forward to sharing the results of the pilots in the near future, and to continuing to provide valuable information to the industry in support of PTI implementation.”

MORE BAD NEWS FOR INDIA'S MANGO GROWERS: THIS TIME HAIL THRASHES UTTARAKHAND GROVES

"In previous years, the production used to be around 13,000 metric tonnes; however it will be comparatively low this year. It is still the month of May and the produces will take time to ripen, but loss has already been clocked," said K. N. Kandpal, horticulture officer.

Farmers have already incurred 60 percent loss in more than 150 orchids across the region.

"Different varieties of mangoes like Langra, Dasheri, Chaunsa have been destroyed. I don't think we will get any value for the 200 boxes of mangoes that we have sent to the market. Had the seed of the mango been formed we would still managed some profit, but most of it has of no value," said Rajinder Singh Rawat, a mango orchard owner.

WALMART'S JUSTIFICATION FOR GOING GREEN

The idea that “going green” could actually be profitable, a notion put forth by economists as long as 20 years ago, remains a source of skepticism in some quarters.

If you still need convincing, pick up Edward Humes’s excellent new book, “Force of Nature” (Harper Business, 265 pages, $27.99), the story of how the world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart, came to go green.

I’ll wager that you won’t look at sustainability issues quite the same way again. It certainly opened my eyes.
