MARKET CHATTER: May 23, 2011

Last week the IMO wrote about a market for Mexico to "make or break".

That was followed by export data that showed that in spite of demand for fruit both internally and in export markets in Asia and Europe, Mexico has chosen to export 92% of it's mangoes to the USA and Canadian markets!

Overlapping end of season and start ups in new mango growing regions have brought a mixed bag of quality issues out of Mexico.

Volume is definitely picking up as the past 7 days saw 2,660,363 carton (4kg) arrive in USA.

The USA market continues in the $3.50 range with some lower and the occasional sale in the $3.75 to $4.00 FOB range. The majority of fruit is trading in the $3.25 - $3.50 FOB Range.

No promotions in sight between now and the 4th of July, by that time there should be plenty of fruit other than mangoes for the USA consumer to choose from.

WHAT THE WORLD ECONOMIC ORDER WILL LOOK LIKE IN 2025: THESE WILL BE THE CUSTOMERS FOR YOUR MANGOES

The World Economic Order, Circa 2025By MOTOKO RICHColor China Photo, via Associated Press

With China overtaking Japan as the world’s second-largest economy last year, there can be no doubt that emerging markets are becoming increasingly powerful. A new report from the World Bank predicts that by 2025, China, along with five other emerging economies — Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Korea and Russia — will account for more than half of all global growth, up from one-third now.

UNDERSTANDING THE CRITICAL ROLE OF NUCLEAR ENERGY: WHY WE CAN'T GO BACK

Ever since Japan’s battered Fukushima Daiichi reactor complex began emitting radiation in March, calls to abandon nuclear power have risen in the U.S. and Germany, among other countries.

If only it were so simple.

Nuclear contributes 20 percent of the U.S. power supply and a significant share in other developed countries.

If we gave it up, what would replace it?

Pollution from fossil-fueled power plants shortens the life span of as many as 30,000 Americans a year.

Coal companies lop off mountaintops, hydraulic fracturing for natural gas threatens water supplies, and oil dependence undermines the nation’s energy security.

Then there is the small matter of greenhouse gas emissions.

Clean renewable technologies will take years to reach the scale needed to replace the power we get from splitting atoms.

MANGO CULTIVAR SELECTION AND ORCHARD MANAGEMENT: CRITICAL ISSUES

Understanding Mango
Mango cultivation in the world is expanding due to the popularity of this fruit and ever increasing demand for fresh and processed mango products.
Hence, there is also a great potential to expand our mango cultivation in Sri Lanka.
However, a profitable mango industry depends on the production capacity of trees.
Trees must be in a position to produce sufficient quantity of fruits every year. To achieve this status, trees must be managed, whether it is in a home garden or in a commercial scale orchard, using a proper tree management system.
Before we embark on growing and managing trees, it is indispensable that at first everybody has a good understanding about this crop -Mango and its range of available varieties. Therefore, let us briefly examine what is mango and mango varieties first .
Mango is an evergreen tree grown under tropical and subtropical environments around the world. It is botanically named as Mangifera indica and is a member of family Anacardiaceae.

BRAZIL IS STRUGGLING TO CONTROL RAMPANT DEFORESTATION; CREATES MINISTRY TO ADDRESS ISSUES

Brazil to Create Cabinet Post to Address DeforestationMAY 19, 2011by AQ Online

Brazilian Minister for the Environment Izabella Teixeira announced yesterday the creation of a cabinet post responsible for monitoring and addressing the deforestation crisis affecting Brazil’s Amazon rainforest.

The cabinet post will be filled by government specialists as well as by members of the Environmental Ministry and representatives from the states which have registered the highest levels of deforestation.

According to satellite imagery, deforestation of the Amazon has increased from 103 square kilometers (64 square miles) in March-April 2010 to 593 square kilometers (368 square miles) this year—an almost 600 percent  increase in one year.

Minister Teixeira called the figures “alarming” while noting the concern as a main reason for establishing the cabinet position.

The increase in deforestation is occurring mostly in Mato Grosso state where nearly 25 percent of Brazil’s soybean harvest is produc…

DECLARADO FIN DE LA NIñA: DESCANSO DE LLUVIAS PARA VENEZUELA Y COLOMBIA ?

COLOMBIA & VENEZUELA SHARE BORDER ON GUAJIRA PENINSULA THAT COULD BE AN ADDITIONAL 3F ZONE

KEEP RUSSIA ON YOUR RADAR AND ROLODEX: THIS IS A KEY MARKET FOR MANGOES

Keep Russia on Your RadarIn many ways, this country is a key supplier of natural resources. Her natural gas reserves alone can wield huge economic power by feeding natural gas through pipelines to Europe and Asia.

Also any production problems in Russia will have an immediate effect on the physical flows of commodities around the globe.

This creates opportunities for investors to profit from higher prices in the futures and options markets.

Last week, for instance, I told you how an unusually cold winter in Russia severely delayed the delivery schedule for several large nickel shipments I was expecting.

The delivery squeeze caused nickel futures to spike, and traders who bought nickel call options made an absolutely killing. Knowledge of Russia Has Been
Invaluable to Me as a Trader
Russia is very different now than it was in the mid-1980s.

But if I took that long vodka-induced walk in central Moscow today – someone would still be watching me.
