To see the big picture of North America, look no further than a new detailed cross-section of the continent that ventures down to its deepest roots and has uncovered a mystery at its very foundation.
Scientists constructed the cut-away map, which is curved just asEarth's surface is, from geological, geochemical and geophysical datacollected for more than 20 years as part of the Canadian Lithoprobe project.
The map starts where the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate dives beneath the North American tectonic plate at the Cascadia subduction zone on the West Coast.
It then reaches more than 3,700 miles (6,000 km) east to the Atlantic margin and delves to the very base of the continent at depths as great as 170 miles (270 km). [See the full cross-section here.]
Continental roots revealed
The cross-section reveals how the mantle roots of the continent and the overlying continental crust both bear more than 3 billion years of scars of ancient continental collisions and eons of oceanic plates and i…
Investment in agriculture and access to markets will help to feed the world

As the G20 agriculture ministers prepare to meet for the first time this week, they will be tasked with addressing a series of complex challenges that have an impact on everyone from smallholder farmers and entrepreneurs to scientists, policymakers, financiers and food consumers around the world.
In other words, we all have good reason to take notice. Ensuring global food security entails weighing a series of related but independent challenges to identify possible synergies and opportunity costs. These include health and nutritional values, accessibility and affordability, farmer livelihoods and rural development, carbon emissions mi…
PUNE: Activist Anna Hazare catapulted into national stardom following his relentless pursuit of the Lokpal Bill, but the unassuming dhoti-clad social worker has been a star in his state, and village, for a long time now.
Fifty-year-old Maruti Auti recalls the days when villagers in Ahmednagar's Ralegan Siddhi, 80 km from Pune, lived in abject poverty over three decades ago. "Farming was impossible. We had land but no water" , he recalls, taking a break from ploughing his twice-cropped field.
The village falls in a drought-prone area with a mere 400 to 500 mm of annual rainfall. There were no weirs to retain rainwater. Out of 2200 acres of cultivable land, just 300 acres was under cultivation. Almost 80 per cent of the villagers depended on work in other villages.
Today, the village is completely transformed. About 1750 acres is under cultivation . The per capita income has increased from about Rs 271 to Rs 29,000. Village wells don't run dry in summer.
