International Produce Limited awards Damco

Damco UK has been awarded with the ‘Clearing and Forwarding Agent of the year’ Award at the second annual International Produce Limited (IPL) Logistics conference in Leeds, West Yorkshire, which took place on the 18th of May 2011.
The 2010 Award was won by Damco South Africa, who was again nominated in the category along with Damco Chile.

IPL is a company wholly owned by ASDA Wal*Mart, set up in 2004 to source the majority of ASDA Wal*Mart’s fresh produce.

Damco has been involved in many of these projects, on both air freight and sea freight.

Damco has worked with IPL almost from the day it was established and the relationship between the two companies has grown into a solid partnership in many areas of the globe. This partnership has helped IPL in their desire to get closer to suppliers and to purchase from them direc…

ASDA WILL FEATURE PAKISTANI MANGOES THROUGH SEPTEMBER....

Asda starts import of Asian mangoes

Asda has signed a deal with the Pakistani High Commission to launch mangoes from the Asian country.

Pakistani mangoes have been well known in wholesale and retail markets and ethnic stores in the UK for many years, but problems with logistics and the lack of awareness of GlobalGAP and BRC standards among the producer-exporter base has largely kept them away from supermarket shelves.

Asda is understood to be working with its direct sourcing arm IPL to bring the fruit in from 15 growers with GlobalGAP certification.

The retailer will be targeting 25-30 of its stores that perform best on ethnic foods.
A spokesman for the retailer said: “This is a trial and if it is successful in those stores then we will look at doing it in more.”

The season will run from June to September for this year’s trial and the mangoes will retail at an unconfirmed but slightly higher price point than Asda’s standard mango offer.

IMF TO REMAIN IN EUROPEAN HANDS AS LAGARDE IS ELECTED TO TOP POST....

Last updated: June 28, 2011 6:43 pm
Lagarde approved as new head of IMF

By Alan Beattie in Washington

Christine Lagarde, the French finance minister, was appointed as the new managing director of the International Monetary Fund on Tuesday and will face tough decisions on the troubled Greek financial bail-out within days.

Ms Lagarde, who had been clear favourite for the job, maintained the long history of recruiting a European to head the IMF. As is traditional, she was appointed by consensus by the fund’s 24-member board.

The only other candidate, the Mexican central bank governor Agustín Carstens, had already admitted that his candidacy was a long shot, but he was praised by the board and by Tim Geithner, US Treasury secretary, for his qualifications and abilities.

Ms Lagarde’s appointment was all but assured after the US and other big economies including China declared support for her on Monday and Tuesday. Australia and Canada had backed Mr Carstens, but he was unable to command broad su…

By The Numbers: What Americans Drink In A Year

Posted: 06/27/11 05:51 PM ET

AdAge recently reported on American per capita beverage consumption for 2010.
Perhaps it comes as no surprise that carbonated soft drinks are the most-consumed beverages, with an average of 44.7 gallons consumed per person, per year.
Rounding out the top three is bottled water at 28.3 gallons and beer at 20.8 gallons.

Also making the cut:

Milk, 20.4 gallons

Coffee, 18.5 gallons

Fruit beverages, 11.5 gallons

Tea, 10.3 gallons

Sports beverages, 4 gallons

Wine, 2.3 gallons

Value-added water, 1.5 gallons

Distilled spirits, 1.5 gallons

Energy drinks, 1.2 gallons

Compared to 2005, the average American drank 6.8 gallons less soda while there is about a three-gallon increase in bottled water consumption.
Also noticeable is the increase in energy drink consumption; in 2005 only 0.5 gallons were consumed.

Gizmodo points out that 44.7 gallons of soda weighs about 375 pounds.

Wine consumption is way too low...as well as distilled spiri…

On one wall of the control centre, a mosaic of TV screens flickers back and forth between the latest satellite photographs and rainfall projections.
On another, a huge screen tracks the entire length of the Yellow river – China's second-longest waterway – with real-time data from dozens of monitoring stations showing flow speed, pollution levels and reservoir volumes.

The operation closely monitors the outflow volumes from each of the nine provinces that …
