MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.—A high-school student from Fort Worth, Texas, won top honors July 11 at the first annual Google Science Fair for her project on drug resistance in ovarian cancer

Shree Bose, 17, investigated the connection between an enzyme called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and resistance to the chemotherapy drug cisplatin.

Bose inhibited the activity of AMPK to see how it affected the death of cancer cells. She found that inhibiting AMPK in cells produced two different reactions to cisplatin, depending on whether or not the cells were resistant to the drug. Inhibiting AMPK reduced cell death in regular cancer cells treated with cisplatin, but the inhibitor actually boosted the cancer-killing effects of cisplatin in cells that were resistant to the drug.

The event is an online, global version of the good old student science fair, and it drew thousands of entries from 90 countries. (Scientific American is a partner in the Google Science Fair.)
The 15 finalists, divided into three age groups, hail from the U.S., Singapore, South Africa, India and Canada. Some of them are just beginning their high school education; ot…

Casino Guichard-Perrachon’s board of directors reaffirmed on Tuesday that it would oppose plans to merge the retail arm of Grupo Pão de Açucar, in which it is a major shareholder, with the Brazilian operations of its main French rival, Carrefour.

Casino’s directors were unanimous in their announcement that “the transaction is contrary to G.P.A.’s interests, as well as those of all of its shareholders and Casino,” calling it “unsolicited, hostile and illegal.”

The press release

Carrefour had announced late last month that it had received an approach from the Brazilian investment firm Gama to join its Brazilian retail business with that of Grupo Pão de Açucar, known as Companhia Brasileira de Distribuição.

Supply chain legend Bowersox dead at 79

Bowersox

Donald J. Bowersox, one of the pioneers of turning logistics and supply chain management into an academic discipline, died on July 4 from a prolonged bout with cancer.

Bowersox, dean emeritus and professor emeritus of marketing and supply chain management at Michigan State University in East Lansing, was 79.

He helped build Michigan State’s supply chain management program into one of the preeminent programs of its kind, in the process becoming one of the most well-known academics in the logistics field. U.S. News & World Report ranks MSU’s supply chain management program No. 2 behind the program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Bowersox was also a founding member of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, originally named the National Council of Physical Distribution Management, and served as its second president.

Congress pressed for action on harbor dredging

The House of Representatives Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment heard testimony on Friday proposed legislation to require expenditures on harbor maintenance to be equal to the amount collected under the Harbor Maintenance Tax.

Jim Weakley, president of the Lake Carriers Association, urged passage of H.R. 104, the Realize America’s Maritime Promise (RAMP) Act, without amendment.

“We are on the verge of a national navigation heart attack.

We need to revive our dying infrastructure with the angioplasty of dredging and sustain it with a healthy maintenance diet,” he said.

“Unless the issue of channel maintenance is addressed, the reliability and responsiveness of the entire intermodal system will slow economic growth and threaten national security,” said Rep. Bob Gibbs, R-Ohio, who chairs the subcommittee.

He said only two of the nation’s 10 largest ports are at their au…
