FLORIDA FARM HAS BEEN IN THE FAMILY FOR 100 YEARS ...GROWING MANGOES SINCE 1961 .....

IMO NOTE:

One would think that the National Mango Board would want this Farm represented on the Board on the Domestic producer seat...

It is a shame that such rich history and mango culture is ignored by the NMB.

How it All Began

Alfred and Elfrida Erickson, Swedish emigrants, settled on the homestead that now comprises the farm in 1911.

Lake Okeechobee was still a natural lake that afforded pristine views. The lake view has since been obstructed by the Herbert Hoover Dike, constructed as a result of the deadly hurricane of 1928.

With their four children (Eva, William, Karl & Floyd), the family began to farm the land. The youngest child, Floyd, was sent to the University of Florida and graduated with an agricultural degree in 1933.

Soon after graduation Floyd and his brother William began farming together. Together they grew vegetables such as tomatoes, squash, pepper, beans, and sweet corn. South Florida was an ideal location to raise these "winter vegetables" that were in hi…

Peru's prime minister Salomon Lerner has unexpectedly resigned.

The decision brings down the government as, under Peruvian law, the entire cabinet must follow suit and step down.

President Ollanta Humala will now have to shuffle his cabinet for the first time since he came to power in July.

Last Sunday, President Humala declared a state of emergency in parts of the country's north after more than a week of protests against plans for a huge, open-cast gold and copper mine.

Reports say Mr Lerner, who had been President Ollanta Humala's campaign manager, has been replaced by the interior minister, Oscar Valdes, a retired military man and President Humala's instructor in the army.Mine controversy

Integrated Tamale Fruit Company: The Nucleus Farm

Integrated Tamale Fruit Company (ITFC) is a Ghanaian, private, Limited Liability Company incorporated in 1999 and operating in the Savelugu-Nanton District of the Northern region of Ghana (see map below1).

Although the company’s focus is cultivating certified organic mangoes for exportation, it anticipates that some proportion (about 10 percent to 20 percent) of the mangoes will end up being sold on the local market.

ITFC runs a company farm with approximately 250 employees and works with over 1,300 small scale outgrower mango farmers (with a target of 2,000 by end of 2007) by providing technical assistance and extending interest-free loans that are only paid back when the trees begin to bear fruit.

The largest shareholder of ITFC, with 50 percent of shares, is Wienco Ghana Limited, a leading Ghanaian fertilizer and agrochemicals manufacturer. The next largest shareholder, with 30 percent shareholding, is Comma, a Dutch company.

Liberia's president, a fellow Liberian and a Yemeni activist received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo today for showing how women facing war and oppression can shed the mantle of victimhood and lead the way to peace and democracy.

"You represent one of the most important motive forces for change in today's world: the struggle for human rights in general and the struggle of women for equality and peace in particular," Norwegian Nobel Committee president Thorbjoern Jagland said before handing out the prestigious award.

At the lavish ceremony in a colourfully flower-decked Oslo city hall, and with Norway's royal family and other dignitaries in attendance, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, her compatriot and "peace warrior" Leymah Gbowee and Yemeni "Arab Spring" activist Tawakkol Karman received their gold medal and diploma.
