INDIA LOOKS TO IMPROVE EXPORTS OF MANGO ...

5 FEB, 2012, 01.20AM IST, ULLEKH NP,ET BUREAU

India needs to focus on quality of Mangoes to expand to new markets

India is the world's largest producer and exporter of mangoes. But a lot more focus on quality is required to expand to new markets. For example, in the US, Pakistani mangoes are giving their Indian cousins a run for their money.

San Jose, California-resident Krishna Kumar loves Indian mangoes. But he doesn't find them in "mainstream" retail outlets in the US - they sell mangoes from Guatemala, Mexico and so on, but not the Indian variety, which are available only in "Indian cash-and-carry stores".

The experience is not very pleasant when he visits them occasionally. Chances that you stare at rotten ones when you open those "certified for irradiation" boxes are high.

"My son is very fond of anything Indian, especially mangoes," says Kumar, a technology and agriculture writer. At $3-5 a piece, Indian mangoes (especially those o…

PEACOCKS ATTACKED THAT ONCE LIVED AND GUARDED MANGO ORCHARDS IN INDIA ...

Peacock poaching feared near Surat

SURAT: Feathers and remains of peacocks have been found in farms near Ranaj village of Mahuva taluka in Surat district in the last two days. Locals and nature activists fear that at least seven peacocks had been killed in these farms for their meat and feathers. The peacocks had gone missing in the last one week from mango orchards around Ranaj village.

Meanwhile, a peacock and a peahen, badly injured, were rescued from the farms. The peahen had injuries on leg, which the nature activists believe were caused by an iron wire trap. The peacock had injuries on eye, due to a 'gilol' attack, fracture in both legs and severe injury on the body due to its feathers having been pulled out, president of Friends of Animal Welfare Trust (FAWT) Jatin Rathod said. "When we visited the farms, we found small uncoloured feathers. This meant the carcasses and coloured feathers of the peacocks had been taken away …

Heineken QR Code Stickers
By Roger ⋅ January 4, 2012 ⋅

Heineken introduced its new brand message ‘Open Your World’ at this year’s Heineken Open’er Music Festival in Gdynia, Poland.

Agency Leo Burnett created the Heineken U-Code, a QR Code sticker that carried the users personal message and anyone attending the festival could make one in the specially constructed Heineken digital tent.
It transpired that creating and scanning a U-Code was a great excuse for people to approach someone new and make friends at the festival (video below).

THE UNDER RATED POWER OF A FRUIT STICKER ....

The Packaging Pitch: does sticker size matter?

February 2nd, 2012

By Fresh Produce Marketing founder Lisa Cork

In this column we are going to take a look at one of my favourite packaging communication tools – the sticker. This little beauty has to be one of the most underutilized tools in a produce marketer’s arsenal. I love stickers because a good one, in a market crowded with bad ones, can get you to cut through and drive incremental sales.

How many of you currently use PLU stickers? For those of you that ship your produce internationally, I realize the world of stickers has changed significantly in the past few years. The new bar code style of sticker definitely limits key messages on the sticker as so much of the limited space is now consumed by the barcode. However, I still see PLU stickers in many markets where fruit is sold domestically, so I will focus on these.

When I talk to people about their ‘on-pack’ message, most don’t feel their PLU stickers have communication value. “They a…
