Espías cubanos sostienen el Gobierno de Hugo Chávez, según Wikileaks
 Globovisión/Elnuevoherald.com
02/04/2012 10:39:50 a.m.

Brazil-US relations near turning point

By Joe Leahy in São Paulo

The case of cachaça, the stiff sugar cane spirit used in Brazil’s national cocktail, the caipirinha, is probably not the first thing on the mind of US President Barack Obama as he prepares for a visit from his Brazilian counterpart, Dilma Rousseff, next week.

But reversing a longstanding US refusal to recognise the Brazilian drink as distinctive from Caribbean rum – thereby subjecting it to adverse tax treatment on rum imports designed to protect producers in the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico – is one of several relatively easy “deliverables” that Mr Obama could offer Ms Rousseff when she arrives on April 9.

Stubborn trade disputes and differences in approach to geopolitics have traditionally clouded what is otherwise a mature if somewhat standoffish friendship between the dominant powers of the Americas. Brazil wants re…

Mango Fruit Fly, Ceratitis cosyra (Walker) (Insecta: Diptera: Tephritidae) (EENY286/IN563)

April 2nd, 2012
Topic(s):Crops

The mango fruit fly is also commonly known as the marula fruit fly, based on its common occurrence in these host plants.

Marula is a native African fruit related to mango and sometimes known locally as wild plum.

This fly is a serious pest in smallholder and commercial mango across sub-Saharan Africa, where it is more destructive than either the Mediterranean fruit fly or the Natal fruit fly.

The fly’s impact is growing along with the more widespread commercialization of mango.

It is one of the most commonly intercepted fruit flies in Europe.

The Jamba Juice Bike Blender: Give Me Five for a Mango Seedling ...

04.02.2012

The Jamba Juice Bike Blender

A stationary bike equipped with a blender won’t probably be described as a wonder machine, yet pumping one’s adrenalins by cycling on it for at least five minutes gives a mighty boost to a remarkable cause.

Dubbed as the Jamba Juice Bike Blender, this contraption was brought in from San Francisco for use in the Jamba Juice events. The Bike Blenders’ presence in the Philippines ushers in Jamba Juice Philippines’ new initiative of promoting not just healthy lifestyle but also the support for the local industry and community livelihood that is rooted in what is arguably the world’s best mangoes: Guimaras mangoes.

“The Philippines is already known for the ferment of some of the best tropical fruits. Jamba Juice, which uses the highest quality of fruits from different countries, is already using our bananas. We are furthering this commitment to quality and freshness by promoting Guimaras mangoes for use in blending more delectable smoothies,” shares Shar…

Plenty of fruit available for CINCO DE MANGO says Diazteca rep ....

Mangoes

While avocados could be short in some U.S. markets for Cinco de Mayo, the same won’t likely be true for mangoes, said Liz Lizarraga, saleswoman for Nogales, Ariz.-based Diazteca Co.

“There’s going to be lots of mangoes, all kinds of mangoes,” she said.

Outstanding growing weather in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, where Diazteca will be sourcing its mangoes for Cinco de Mayo sales, should mean good size and excellent quality, with fruit sweeter than usual for this time of year, Lizarraga said.

The USDA reported prices of $5.50-6.50 for one-layer cartons of tommy atkinses 7s from Mexico, up from $3.50-4.25 last year at the same time.

OCEAN CARGO: MOL Faces Unprecedented Challenges, Company President Says ...

The Journal of Commerce Online - News Story

Glut of new ship capacity, high fuel rates, slow economic growth prompt forecast of highest-ever loss this year

Japanese shipping giant MOL believes the current cross-sector shipping recession is without historical precedent.

Speaking Monday to mark the 128th anniversary of the company’s founding, President Koichi Muto said the company is facing a perfect storm of economic and market negatives.

“In the course of our 128-year history, we have faced our fair share of crises, including the devastation of World War II,” he said. “However, over the past few years, we have faced a challenging business environment unlike anything our generation has previously experienced.”

He said MOL is projecting a consolidated ordinary loss of 27 billion yen this year, the largest in its history. “To put this into perspective,” he explained, “we still generated consolidated ordinary income of 24.2 billion yen i…

Expecting big things
Monday April 02 2012

LATIN America has great potential, no doubt about it; just consider Brazil. Earlier this month, Brazil’s finance minister informed us all that Brazil has become the sixth-biggest economy in the world, growing 2.7% last year.

If that doesn’t sound too impressive, consider growth in the UK of just 0.8% during the same period.

Indeed, in the past decade Brazil has consolidated its position as an agricultural superpower, with seeds and oil fruits high up on its export list, along with sugar and confectionery, meat and coffee, tea and yerba mate.

Chile is not far behind, however. Just last week Pablo Ugarte, head of investment promotion to France and the UK, told delegates at the latest Latin American Trade and Investment Association (LATIA) that agri-business in the country has boomed in recent years. Exports of non-traditional products such as wine have proved very popular, with producers taking a…

EU pledges to $109.5m to Caricom

The European Union has pledged $109.5 million to help Caricom, the 15-nation Caribbean trade bloc improve its single-market trading system.

More than $61 million is designated to hire service industry experts, remove trade barriers and help Caricom upgrade its sanitation standards to meet EU import requirements for food items.

Caricom Secretary General Irwin LaRocque said late Wednesday that Belize and Haiti will receive special allocations to help them take greater advantage of free trade within the region and with Europe.

SHOCKING: Under 25 unemployment Chart from Europe ....

We've Seen This Unemployment Chart Literally Cause People's Jaws To Drop

Joe Weisenthal

Back in January, we were watching a TV program with a few other people who, like most people, weren't paying that much attention to the finer details of the trainwreck in Europe.

A chart of youth unemployment throughout Europe came on, and we literally saw jaws drop in the room.

Anyway, Reuters' Scotty Barber has updated what is essentially the same chart, and it's just as jaw dropping.

Besides the surge in Spanish and Greek youth unemployment, there are a couple things that stand out.

One is the reversion to the pre-Euro mean, especially in Spain. You see this kind of thing echoed in interest rate charts, too, where countries are paying rates similar to what they paid in the pre-euro days.

We're also impressed with the way Germans keep their kids working, even in these tough times.

Even as the government mulls over attaining a general consensus on opening up foreign direct investment (FDI) norms in multi-brand retail, the world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart, is slowly expanding its footprint in India. In the pipeline are plans to open more B2B stores with joint venture partner Bharti Enterprises. On hold are its plans to open the low-cost, no frills front-end multi-branded retail stores.

“Our new store development is focused on high-growth markets such as Mexico, China, and Brazil,” said a WalMart India spokesperson. “We continue to pursue the middle-income customer in these markets. We have recently established our presence in high growth markets such as India and Africa with our joint ventures. In India we currently have 17 Best Price Modern Wholesale stores and are looking further to expand our presence in the country.”

BRAZIL: Less fruit available for export ...

Brazilians gloomy over low fruit exports this season

April 2nd, 2012

Brazilian exporters are bracing themselves for a third consecutive year of low fruit exports this season, websiteRuralbr.com.br reported

                                                                                                              .

Figures from the Brazilian Fruit Insitute (IBRAF) show volumes will continue their downward trend since 2009.

“The expectation for this year is that the result, in the best case scenario, will be stable relative to last year,” the industry organization was quoted as saying.

In 2011, exports were down year-on-year by 10.29% at 681,200 metric tons (MT).

IBRAF agronomist Clovis Ribeiro said despite January and February showing a 9% export volume increase at 96,300MT, this did not indicate a positive scenario for the rest of the year.

“The trend for 2012 is not the best. These factors decrease our competitiveness in the international market,” he was quoted as saying.

Ribeiro said Br…

REVIEW: Burger King Fruit Smoothies (Strawberry Banana and Tropical Mango)

Written by Marvo | March 22, 2012

Wendy’s just overtook Burger King to become the second largest burger chain in the US in terms of sales. So no longer can Burger King say, “First is the worst, second is the best, and third is the nerd with the hairy chest.”

However, Burger King can now say, “Number one tastes like piss, number two tastes like poop, and number three tastes like paradise.” Although, if humans evolve and we end up producing a third human waste, Burger King might want to drop down to number four.

What caused Burger King to lose their place as the distant runner-up to McDonald’s in the burger world? I’m no business analyst, but it might’ve been their advertising, which included the cold plastic eyes of The King. Or it could’ve been their chicken fries.

To turn their fortunes around and become a distant second to McDonald’s again, Burger King has introduced a number of McDonald’s-like products, such as t…
