Yon, Pastor, and the concept of opportunity cost

Maldonado celebrating with Maria Gabriela Chávez

There was a big Twitter-ruckus yesterday after the publication of Yon Goicoechea's latest column in El Universal

In it, Goicoechea criticizes Venezuelans for cheering and applauding Pastor Maldonado’s Formula 1 triumph last weekend

He reminds his readers how much Maldonado’s sponsorship has cost Venezuela, how PDVSA has no need to be “promoting” itself on race cars, and how it is issuing debt to, among other things, be able to pay for these exploits.

The backlash was as swift as it was unsurprising. This is a country where absolutely nobody understands the concept of opportunity cost.

Putting aside childish complaints about Goicoechea’s “tone” – I mean, really, after thirteen years of chavismo you would think we would have developed a thicker skin – the main point of the article is absolutely, 100% accurate.

Maldonado’s sponsorship is simply…

What does one TRILLION dollars look like?
by Global Research, March 16, 2009

All this talk about "stimulus packages" and "bailouts"...

A billion dollars...

A hundred billion dollars...

Eight hundred billion dollars...

One TRILLION dollars...

What does that look like?

I mean, these various numbers are tossed around like so many doggie treats, so I thought I'd take Google Sketchup out for a test drive and try to get a sense of what exactly a trillion dollars looks like.

We'll start with a $100 dollar bill.

Currently the largest U.S. denomination in general circulation.

Most everyone has seen them, slighty fewer have owned them.

Guaranteed to make friends wherever they go.

A packet of one hundred $100 bills is less than 1/2" thick and contains $10,000.

Fits in your pocket easily and is more than enough for week or two of shamefully decadent fun.

Believe it or not, this next little pile is $1 million dollars (100 packets of $10,000). You …

It’s Almost Mango Season Here at the Edison Ford – Are You Ready?

Posted by Edison Ford Winter Estates  On May 16th, 2012

Todd Roy, Edison Ford Horticulturist & Garden Shoppe Manager

As I strolled through the garden Saturday I came across the first ripe Mango of the season. The Southern Blush variety is an early season variety, but doesn’t disappoint on flavor.

The gardens at the Edison Ford contain over a dozen different varieties of Mangoes.

They range from early season to mid season to late season varieties like the Keitt Mango. An early season favorite of mine is Bailey’s Marvel, a large Mango with great flavor, beautiful colors and very little fiber.

We also have a variety called Kent that is velvety smooth with no fiber and excellent flavor.

The local growers favor the Valencia Pride Mango, a large oblong shaped Mango with a sweet flavor.

If you’re a little tight on space, consider planting a dwarf variety like Pickering that can be kept at about six to eight feet tall.

PHILIPPINES: Agro-Tourism Pushed In Aeta Villages ...

May 19, 2012, 7:06pm

FLORIDABLANCA, Pampanga — The provincial government here will plant at least 4,000 mango and banana plants in three Aeta villages here in a bid to transform the upland communities here into an agro-tourism destination in Central Luzon.

The mango and banana seedlings will be planted in barangays Nabuclod, Camachile, and Mawacat.

The provincial government has been mobilizing various agencies of the government to fully develop the area as an ideal eco-tourism destination.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has an on-going tramline project in Floridablanca which will improve the agricultural production in the upland communities and help improve the economy of its indigenous-people residents.

Roy Imperial, agriculture consultant of the Pampanga provincial government, said that Governor Lilia Pineda and DA officials led the distribution of 4,000 mango and banana plant seedlings recently.

He said that the governor is very much appreciative of the suppo…

Venezuelan Authorities Regain Control of La Planta Prison after Violence By EWAN ROBERTSON TAGSGlobovisiónPrisons Mérida, 18th May 2012 ( – On Thursday night Venezuelan authorities regained control of La Planta prison in Caracas after an outbreak of violence between prisoners.  The government pledged to guarantee the human rights of inmates and is transferring them to other penitentiary facilities ahead of La Planta’s closure. Thursday night’s events brought to an end almost four weeks of defiance by some groups of prisoners opposed to their eviction from the La Planta facility.  Venezuelan authorities had previously decided to close the prison citing overcrowding and dangers to the local community. On Thursday morning gunfire broke out within La Planta, lasting several hours. State security forces maintained a presence outsi…

Iris Varela, no longer funny

Posted on August 5, 2011 by Francisco Toro

I’ll admit, when Iris Varela was appointed to a cabinet position, I smiled broadly.

Iris is a nutter, a loose cannon, the personification of unhinged chavista maximalism, but somehow also an ingenue, so earnest in her extremism she forgets to mind the details.

All of this makes her an irresistible subject for a blogger – plus, did we mention? her hair looks funny.

But this, this is not funny.

In the kind of move that seems culled from some right-wing parody of idiotic bleeding-heart liberalism, this crazy lady has actually banned sending people to jail. In a country with a five-figure murder rate.

No, Iris is not funny anymore. She’s dangerous. She’s very, very dangerous.
