THE BEST OF VENEZUELA: Santana pitches first no-hitter in Mets' history ...

NEW YORK (AP) -- For more than 50 years, the New York Mets chased that elusive no-hitter. Johan Santana finally finished the job.

Santana pitched the first no-hitter in team history, helped by an umpire's missed call and an outstanding catch in left field in an 8-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.

After a string of close calls over the last five decades, Santana went all the way in the Mets' 8,020th game.

"Finally, the first one," he said. "That is the greatest feeling ever."

He needed a couple of key assists to pull it off.

Carlos Beltran , back at Citi Field for the first time since the Mets traded him last July, hit a line drive over third base in the sixth inning that hit the foul line and should have been called fair. But third base umpire Adrian Johnson ruled it foul and the no-hitter was intact - even though a replay clearly showed a mark where the ball landed on the chalk line.

"I saw the ball hitting outside the line, just foul,…

Measure approved as part of fiscal 2013 state budget

The South Carolina Senate set aside $180 million in state funding to deepen Charleston’s harbor from 45 feet to 50 feet, the South Carolina State Ports Authority said.

The S.C. Senate approved the measure last week as part of the state budget for fiscal year 2013 and sent amendments back to the S.C. House of Representatives for concurrence.

The Army Corps of Engineers in February allocated $2.5 million for the feasibility study of deepening the Charleston harbor as part of its budget for 2012.

The $2.5 million included in the Corps’ budget will continue progress on the study, which began last summer.

The study is expected to cost around $20 million, which is funded 50/50 by the Federal Government and the local sponsor. The SCPA also has committed to accelerate its half of the study funds a…

JUST-FOOD Commentary for Friday, June 01, 2012 ....

Issue 624

June 1, 2012

An early editorial column, then, as we prepare for the long bank holiday weekend here in the UK.

And so much for a quiet news day. There has been frenzied speculation today (1 June) over the future of Groupe Doux, Europe's largest poultry processor.

The French firm has been locked in talks with potential investors and lenders as it faces debts of around EUR430m and with a payment due. Earlier this week, Doux admitted to just-food that receivership could be "an option" for the business.

Reports in France this morning suggested a court had registered a "declaration of insolvency" from Doux. When contacted by just-food, Doux declined to comment but said it was awaiting a decision from the court, which had been set for 2pm French time. According to AFP, talks between Doux, its lenders and potential investors and the French state have delayed the ruling, which is now scheduled for 5pm. Doux will then issue a statement, a spokesperson told…

FOODNEWS Commentary for Friday, June 01, 2012 ...

Stronger by association
Friday June 01 2012

AT the end of May, FOODNEWS’ staff spread out to locations around the world to cover conferences for a number of food industry sectors.

Our coverage from these events continues this week, and will spread into next, as we attend events for the processing tomato industry in Beijing and for canned foods in Greece.

These meetings frequently help to crystallise the concerns and challenges of the various product groups, but they also highlight the degree to which an industry works together, or does not.

At a time of high food prices and production costs, fierce competition between agricultural commodities for growing land, fast-growing demand from emerging economies, and co-operation across national boundaries is becoming more and more important to ensure a safe and stable food supply for the future.

The food industry benefits from the presence of dozens of global associations that seek to draw together members of their respective industries, and perf…

VENEZUELA: A Look at Serbian Kingpin's Latin America Connections ...

Written by Geoffrey Ramsey

The case of a shady Balkan crime network sheds light on the ways that the South American drug trade has spread to far-flung corners of the globe.

While the lion’s share of cocaine trafficked from the Andes is reserved for the US market, European customers are also an important source of revenue for transnational drug trafficking networks.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) 2010 World Drug Report, Europe is home to between 4 and 5 million cocaine users. What’s more, experts believe demand for the drug is on the rise there.

While cocaine use appears to be declining in North America, UN data shows that the number of cocaine consumers in Europe doubled from 2 million in 1998 to 4.1 million in 2008.

It is in this emerging market that Darko Saric (pictured), a Serbian kingpin with extensive criminal ties, made much of his wealth.

According to an investigation by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting…

Airlines double freight rates for mango exports

Shahid ShahFriday, June 01, 2012
From Print Edition

KARACHI: Local and foreign commercial airlines have doubled their freight rates for mango export from Pakistan thereby making export of the fruit less competitive than regional peers, exporters said on Thursday.

A spokesperson of the Welfare Association Wholesale Vegetable Market Shaikh Waqar Ahmed told The News that almost all airlines including the national flag carrier increased their cargo charges by 100 percent while mango prices did not increase at that margin in the world, which reduced profit of exporters and made the export difficult for them.

“Freight rates for Middle East increased to Rs70 per kg from Rs35 per kg last year,” he said.

Mango export started from May 25th through air routes and cargo went to Middle East, European countries and the South East Asian countries.

Pakistan’s export was closed for Iran, as later increased its duty to 250 percent and made exports impossible. I…
