A New Cast, a Winning Ride at the Belmont Stakes ...

Chang W. Lee/The New York Times

Jockey John R. Velazquez celebrates after riding Union Rags to victory at the Belmont Stakes. Johnny V., as he is known, was recently named to the Hall of Fame.

This 144th running of the Belmont Stakes was supposed to be about history, about a gritty colt named I’ll Have Another’s determined assault on a feat achieved by only 11 horses.

But the colt’s Triple Crown quest blew up on Friday when a sore tendon derailed the Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion and his connections decided I’ll Have Another would not have another chance to run.

Ever again.

Delveland Mango Festival organisers rue lack of support

Mark Titus, Gleaner Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:Key stakeholders in the Delveland Mango Festival in Westmoreland have dismissed claims that infighting among the organisers has led to the event not being organised since 2009.

"That is definitely not true. There is no infighting. It has more to do with the financing of the event. We have no money," said Maizie Campbell, one of the festival's founding members.

Councillor for the Sheffield Division, Derrick McKenzie, told Western Focus that the absence of the mango festival has left a void in the community.

"I have made some enquiries to determine why the event is not taking place anymore because it has placed the community on the map. But they (the residents) are very closed about it, and f…

A Terrible "bill of goods" has been sold to the Pakistani Mango Industry by USAID, et al.

Hot Water Treatment of mangoes ruins the flavor. This is a fact.

The world will never eat a "TRUE" Pakistani mango once it has been Hot water Treated.

If however, this protocol allows access to markets for Pakistani mango exporters, then the System has SOLD OUT.

A Terrible disservice has been committed on behalf of free trade.

FLAVOR HAS BEEN SACRIFICED IN THE NAME OF COMMERCE.

NEXT TIME IN COCOA BEACH FLORIDA: VISIT THE MANGO TREE ....

Jeff Smith of The Mango Tree

Jeff Smith of The Mango Tree
By Paddy McDrinksey

More than a restaurant, the recently revamped Mango Tree is an architectural and culinary icon. It also happens to be a great place for a drink.

Seek shelter from the sweltering heat inside this quaint, Bahamian-style cottage, sidle up to the bar, and order one of their famous, freshly made mango margaritas. Try an appetizer or two, have a few more margaritas and, against your better judgment, call me to come meet you so you can buy me some drinks and an excellent Italian dinner. Thanks. That’s very magnanimous of you.

Don’t worry. Jeff, the bartender there, will take good care of us. I’ve known him for a while. He’s a good bloke, Jeff. He counts himself fortunate to have grown up in the small town of New Hope, Pennsylvania, a place that’s known for its involvement in the Arts and many fine dining restaurants, many of which he worked in as a kid. “The experience served me very well through my coll…

Fried mangoes, pickled mangoes, blended mangoes, ...

It was mango madness in Agat yesterday. The southern village welcomed guests with a row of mango signs that lined the entrance to the village. There were locally grown mangoes of all shapes and colors -- ripe green to sunset orange. The mangoes were in different states, too -- whole, chopped, battered, blended.

Yesterday's Mango Festival, held at Sagan Bisita, was a treat for mango lovers, locals and tourists alike.

"I love mangoes," said Santa Rita resident Pat Pollard, 63. This is his third Mango Festival.

Estonia to Krugman: Y’all Needs to Chill

by The Editors

June 09, 2012

Paul Krugman and Toomas Henrik Ilves

The ex-Soviet satellite state of Estonia is home to slightly over a million people and is smaller than Vermont and New Hampshire combined. Yet in the contentious debate between “austerity” and “stimulus”—i.e., ceasing to spend far more than you have versus further indenturing your citizen-vassals for generations—it’s becoming the mouse that roared.

A few facts about the thumbnail-sized Baltic nation:

• In a 2006 State of World Liberty Index review of 159 countries based on “economic and personal freedoms,” Estonia ranked first.

• As of 2010, it boasted—by far—the lowest debt-to-GDP ratio of all countries in the eurozone.

• It’s the eurozone’s only country to report budget surpluses for two years running.

• Its economy is growing faster than any other nation in the EU.
