RIO + 20: Christ Turns ‘Green’ at U.N. Earth Summit — Literally ...

By David Rothbard & Craig Rucker
June 20, 2012 11:47 A.M.

Green guru James Lovelock was right. He warned last week that “the green religion is now taking over from the Christian religion.”

Now at the U.N. Earth Summit, even the image of Christ has been made a forcible convert to the eco-faith, as the city of Rio is bathing the iconic statue of Christ theRedeemer (Christo Redentor) in green light:

This comes on the heels of a Rio+20 side summit in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where Naomi Tsur, Jerusalem’s deputy mayor for planning and environment, led a discussion about how holy sites around the world can be used to indoctrinate pilgrims visiting venerated places like Bethlehem, Calvary, and the burial site of King David.

The workshop on “Green Pilgrim Cities” took place at the World Congress of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), the group responsible for implementing the U.N.’s “Agenda 21” sustainable-development plans at the local level.

USA ECONOMY: America's Debt Levels Are Falling To Pre-Crisis Levels ...

Eric Platt | 8 minutes ago

New data suggests that U.S. deleveraging could be more than half way through, Deutsche Bank Economist Joe LaVorgna writes today.

After peaking in the first quarter of 2009, total U.S. debt as a percentage of GDP has fallen to pre-crisis levels.

He writes:

Financial institution and household debt combined, as a percentage of GDP is now at the lowest level since Q4 2002.

In short, households and financial institutions have undertaken significant balance sheet repair, which in the case of the latter sector, leaves them in a particularly more robust financial position.

Paraguay's President Ousted in Impeachment Trial

ASUNCION, Paraguay June 23, 2012 (AP)

Paraguay's Senate voted to remove President Fernando Lugo from office on Friday in an impeachment trial, and the former priest said he would leave even though he considered his ouster as a blow to democracy.

After the rapid five-hour trial, 39 senators dismissed the former Roman Catholic "bishop of the poor," while four senators voted against and two were absent. Based on the decision, Lugo is to be replaced right away by Vice President Federico Franco of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party.

"I say goodbye as president," Lugo said shortly after the Senate vote. He said Paraguay's democracy "has been deeply wounded."

Crowds of pro-Lugo protesters took to the streets condemning the impeachment trial and expressing support for the president. Police in anti-riot gear drove them back on horseback and using water cannons.

Paraguay's lower house of Congress voted to imp…

Declarado culpable

REFLECTIONS ON RIO + 20 By Just- Foods Editorial Staff ....

In the spotlight: Rio+20

By: Ben Cooper | 22 June 2012

This week world leaders and government representatives convened in Rio de Janeiro for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, taking place 20 years after the 'Earth Summit' of 1992.

Ben Cooper reflects on Rio+20.

Given the horridly unseasonal weather in northern Europe for the last couple of months, delegates from that part of the world may have been forgiven for contemplating a change of climate rather than climate change as they rolled down to Rio for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development which closes today (22 June).

The conference has been officially dubbed Rio+20 as it marks the 20th anniversary of the Rio 'Earth Summit', arguably the key setting-off point for much of the progress on environmental sustainability made possible during the last two decades by the actions of governments, companies and not least consumers.

Some observers have noted the contrast in prevailing attitude…

BP + 2: Revisiting Gulf Islands National Seashore two years after the biggest offshore oil disaster ever.

The Aftermath

By Mark Schrope

Dennis Gerfen moved from California to Pensacola, Florida, 11 years ago.

The retired Navy electronics technician walks the almost snow-white sand beaches of nearby Perdido Key two or three times a week.

But he stopped in April 2010, when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig began spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico—oil that would eventually reach Perdido and the 106 miles of Mississippi and Florida beaches in the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

From April to July of 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil well, operated by BP, spewed more than 170 million gallons of oil into Gulf waters.

The disaster played out just 70 miles south of some Gulf Islands beaches, and no sector of the park would be spared by the oil’s eventual spread.

Cleanup in the Gulf has proved to be a massive endeavor that forced the National Park Service to make some unprecedented decisions about just how far it would go to remove oil from the seashore. Today, as BP and the federal government work to set…

Rio+20 summit
Green business

Jun 22nd 2012, 1:23 by J.A. | RIO DE JANEIRO

CAN companies succeed where governments have failed to protect the environment?

The question was repeatedly asked in Rio de Janeiro this week, at the UN’s vast three-day environment summit, which was due to end on June 22nd.

That was largely a sign of desperation.

Despite the presence of scores of heads of state, Rio+20, as the summit is known, was expected to produce the weakest imaginable commitment to greening the global economy. On many counts—including a wishy-washy commitment to look beyond GDP as a measure of progress—it represented little or no progress on the summit’s more illustrious forebear, the 1992 Earth Summit, at which important agreements on combating climate change and biodiversity loss were reached.

Yet the prominence of many of the world’s biggest companies in Rio this week was a cause for genuine, if perhaps limited, cheer. Hardly any were represented in Rio in 1992; in 2012 companies were all ov…
