The Changing of the Guard

History-making victory gallop: Team GB dressage gold medalists Laura Bechtolsheimer on Mistral Hojris, Charlotte Dujardin on Valegro, and Carl Hester on Uthopia. Photo by Jennifer Bryant.

Those of us of a certain age remember a time when the thought of someone other than Germany or the Netherlands dominating dressage was unthinkable.

Those nations were well-oiled machines that cranked out title after title--the headlines were continually dominated by Nicole, Isabell, Anky, Isabell, Anky--and seemed unstoppable.

The US began knocking on the door in the 1990s, earning a string of Olympic team bronze medals. But Great Britain? They weren't even taken seriously in the world of international dressage.

Well, the previously unthinkable happened today: Team GB won its first-ever Olympic dressage team gold medal (total team combined average score of the Grand Prix and today's Grand Prix Special: 79.979 percent), leaving in its wake silver me…

Stratfor

By George Friedman

Louis M. Bacon is the head of Moore Capital Management, one of the largest and most influential hedge funds in the world.

Last week, he announced that he was returning one quarter of his largest fund, about $2 billion, to his investors.

The reason he gave to The New York Times was that he had found it difficult to invest given the impossibility of predicting the European situation.

He was quoted as saying, "The political involvement is so extreme -- we have not seen this since the postwar era. What they are doing is trying to thwart natural market outcomes. It is amazing how important the decision-making of one person, Angela Merkel, has become to world markets."

The purpose of hedge funds is to make money, and what Bacon essentially said was that it is impossible to make money when there is heavy political involvement, because political involvement introduces unpredictability in the market.

More opportunities to sell mangoes to Western Australia ...

By Matt Brann

Tuesday, 07/08/2012

Western Australia has changed some of its quarantine rules for importing mangoes, which should make it easier for interstate growers to sell fruit into WA.

At the moment, WA doesn't have the pest known as mango seed weevil, but parts of the Northern Territory, Queensland and NSW do, which in the past has limited trade.

Under its new entry requirements, WA will now accept mangoes from plantations which can guarantee an area of freedom status for mango seed weevil.

WA's director of plant biosecurity, Dr Shashi Sharma, says there are now several options for those wanting to import mangoes into WA, but the changes will not expose WA to an "unacceptable level of biosecurity risk".

"I don't think in terms of risk management there is any change, but it's the flexibility offered to the exporters and growers that has and if they are able to achieve risk reduction to the extent which meets the criteria, it'll result in more trade,&q…

HAWAII: 2012 Kailua-Kona Mango Festival on the Big Island ...

BY Claire K. Bajo RS - Everyone had a great time at this year’s Mango Festival! Randyl Rupar, promoter of this awesome event, along with his non-profit organization Mana Ke’a Gardens, chose a glorious weekend to have a “Meeting of the Mangoes” – and then some!

I was asked to be the Mistress of Ceremonies three days before the event, and I was amazed at how many people it took to put this two-day event together…it took a community of volunteers, and thousands of fans who love Hawaii and this cherished tropical fruit!
Mango Day Officially Recognized

On the Royal Gardens at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Hotel, the Mayor’s Proclamation was given to Randyl on Saturday – the Proclamation recognized July 28 and 29th as Official Mango Day on the Big Island, in honor of the weekend-long event.

Bobby Command presented the Proclamation for Mayor Kenoi, and it was such an honor to be a part of this proud moment for Randyl, as he has been putting on these tropical fruit events for the last 4 years.

ERNESTO THREATENS TO PICK UP FORCE BEFORE MAKING LANDFALL ...

Tropical Storm Ernesto is forecast to strengthen today as it moves toward the Yucatan Peninsula.

The center is located on this Tuesday morning over the northwestern Caribbean Sea about 285 miles east of Belize City.

The forecast track brings the center of Ernesto north of the coast of Honduras today, approach the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula tonight, move across that Peninsula late tonight

Maximum sustained winds are 65 mph, and Ernesto is expected to become a hurricane before it reaches the Yucatan Peninsula, with weakening as it moves over land.

A Hurricane Warning continues for the entire coast of Belize, and along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula from Chetumal to Punta Allen. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion. Additional Tropical Storm Watch and Warnings have been issued.
