Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) wins (again) the most significant victory of his congressional career. He has taken his pet issue since the 1970s–the unwarranted power and secrecy of the Federal Reserve–from something pretty much no one but him cared about six years ago, through a bestselling book and mass movement by 2009, the second time he’s gotten the House of Representatives to vote to widen the government’s powers to audit the Fed’s activities.

Huffington Post with details about the vote , and on Paul’s Democratic ally equally upset with the Fed’s lack of transparency, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio):

In a rare moment of bipartisanship, the House overwhelmingly passed a bill by Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) to audit the Federal Reserve.

The first ever GAO (Government Accountability Office) audit of the Federal Reserve was carried out in the past few months due to the Ron Paul, Alan Grayson Amendment to the Dodd-Frank bill, which passed last year. Jim De…

Its a Friday Night Salmonella Mango Salsa Recall with Illnesses on the Side

Posted: Sat, 01 Sep 2012 03:34:17 +0000

It started out this week with produce distributor Splendid Products voluntarily recalling certain lots of Daniella brand mangoes because they may be contaminated with Salmonella braenderup.

The recalled mangoes, a product of Mexico, were sold as individual fruit and can be identified by the Daniella brand sticker and one of the following PLU numbers: 3114, 4051, 4311, 4584 or 4959. The recalled mangoes were sold at various retail stores throughout the U.S. between July 12 and August 29, 2012.

Mangoes have been linked to a number (21) of recent cases of salmonellosis in Canada, and will by week’s end be linked to cases in California and 16 other states.

Then Giant Food of Landover, Md., following a voluntary recall by Splendid Products, announced it removed from sale Daniella mangos due to possible Salmonella braenderup contamination. The following product, purchased between…

Brazil presses Venezuela on alleged Amazon massacre

* Brazil wants joint probe of alleged helicopter attack

* Native tribe says villagers attacked by Brazilian miners

* Venezuela unable to confirm attack, any victims

By Paulo Prada and Peter Murphy

Caracas, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Brazil said on Friday it is pressing Venezuela to determine whether Brazilian gold miners crossed the border and massacred a village of about 80 indigenous people from a helicopter.

The alleged assault, which a tribal group says could have killed more than 70 people in early July, came to light earlier this week when the group asked Venezuela's government to investigate.

Because of the remoteness of the region and the scattered nature of the native settlements, fellow tribe members were able to alert the government only on Monday.

Brazil's Foreign Ministry said on Friday its embassy in Caracas had asked the Venezuelan government to provide it with any information that could help it determine whether the attack had happened and whether B…

FOCUS ON NUTRITION: The tawdry medical history of soft drinks ...

Annalee Newitz

It is a little-known fact that one the most outrageously unhealthy drinks in the world — Coca Cola — has its roots in a health craze of the Victorian Age. The history of sodas offers us a window on a strange time when medicine became a tasty, intoxicating treat.

In the nineteenth century, inventors created two machines that ultimately improved the lives of millions. These machines were the steam-driven espresso maker, and the soda fountain.

Though the use of espresso has remained pretty much unchanged over the years, soda has gone from a healing elixir to tooth-eroding menace in just over a century. What changed?

Soda as Quack Medicine

Let's go back in time to the early nineteenth century, when many people believed that their health could be improved by an invigorating bath in natural mineral springs. If it was good to bathe in, surely it was also good to drink! And so as the century wore on, the health craze for mineral water led entrepreneurs to figure…
