HSBC Mexican Branches Said to Be Traffickers’ Favorites ...

By Chris Dolmetsch - Dec 11, 2012 9:04 PM ET

HSBC Holdings Plc (HSBA)’s Mexican branches had become so well-known to drug traffickers as the place to launder proceeds from illicit sales that cartels began using special boxes to speed transactions, U.S. prosecutors said.

From 2006 to 2010, the Sinaloa cartel in Mexico and the Norte del Valle Cartel in Columbia moved more than $881 million in proceeds through HSBC’s U.S. unit, said Lanny Breuer, assistant attorney general for the U.S. Justice Department’s criminal division. Breuer, along with U.S. Attorney Lorretta Lynch in Brooklyn, New York, announced today the bank had agreed to pay at least $1.9 billion to settle money laundering probes.

“These traffickers didn’t have to try very hard,” Breuer said at a press conference in Brooklyn.

FOOD SAFETY 101: Dishwashers No Match For Norovirus

December 11, 2012

By Carla Gillespie

What do norovirus and baked-on lasagna have in common?

 Both can survive the dishwasher.

Researchers at Ohio State University have made a discovery that may help to explain why restaurants have a hard time controlling the spread of norovirus, the leading cause of food poisoning worldwide.

About half of all foodborne illness outbreaks in the US are caused by norovirus, most of them, about 80 percent, happen between November and April, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Norovirus is a virus that can get on food at any point from farm to table.

Foods that are eaten raw are such as leafy vegetables, fruit, and shellfish, are most commonly involved in norovirus outbreaks.

Sick food handlers are frequently the source of outbreaks such as the recent Salmonella outbreak in Illinois.

“Proper sanitation and handling remain the single biggest factor that can prevent cross-contamination of food and dishwashers at food service establi…

CHAVEZ: YA NO HAY PASO ATRAS ...

ALTO

HAS DAYLIGHT SAVINGS OUTLIVED IT'S USEFULNESS ???...

Dear colleagues,

Ecometrica GHG Analyst Sylvie Trottier has written a new blog post and accompanying white paper that you may be interested in.

Sylvie's articles discuss whether or not there is a case for extending Daylight Saving Time (DST) on environmental grounds.

Ever since the United States and most of Europe implemented DST during the First World War, debate has raged on both its benefits and drawbacks.

The most common argument for extending DST year-round has an environmental basis: if DST saves energy, why not make it permanent, and thereby reduce gas and electricity bills as well as national GHG emissions?

Sylvie's blog post can be found on Ecometrica.com at the link below:

17 brands in Twitter’s overall top 100, what are today’s most followed brands on Twitter? ...

POSTED DECEMBER 10, 2012

BY BRAM KANSTEIN,

Yesterday, the author stumbled upon a post on Mediabistro, called The ten most popular brands on Twitter. It was a post from March this year, so it was still relatively recent.

The online world moves so fast, and brands are becoming increasingly aware of the need to have a social presence.

That’s why I decided to take a look at the top 10 today, and see if anything has changed in the last nine months.

And sure enough, it has – there are three newcomers to the top ten.

The number one, which is still @youtube by some distance, has doubled in followers since March, to more than twenty million. However, overall it resides only in eighth place overall in Twitter’s top 100.

The first seven handles – and this is not a surprise – belong to celebrities, with Justin Bieber and Katy Perry trailing the Queen of Twitter, Lady Gaga.

However, sticking squarely to the brand realm, what exactly has changed in recent months? Let’s take a look.

MIDDLE EAST MARKETS: The Israeli Periphery ...

Stratfor

Vice President of Global Affairs

The state of Israel has a basic, inescapable geopolitical dilemma: Its national security requirements outstrip its military capabilities, making it dependent on an outside power.

Not only must that power have significant military capabilities but it also must have enough common ground with Israel to align its foreign policy toward the Arab world with that of Israel's.

These are rather heavy requirements for such a small nation.

Security, in the Israeli sense, is thus often characterized in terms of survival. And for Israel to survive, it needs just the right blend of geopolitical circumstance, complex diplomatic arrangements and military preparedness to respond to potential threats nearby.

Over the past 33 years, a sense of complacency settled over Israel and gave rise to various theories that it could finally overcome its dependency on outside powers. But a familiar sense of unease crept back into th…
