As you are probably aware by now, the current ILA labor contract expires at midnight on Saturday December 29, 2012. 




With a new contract not yet in place this means there is a potential for a coastal wide strike starting December 30, 2012.

Sol Shipping Services Leases Terminal at Port Everglades

Produce importer Sol Shipping Services has entered a five-year agreement to operate a five-acre marine terminal at Florida's Port Everglades.




Sol has operated seasonally at the port since the 1990s through another terminal, but the new agreement gives the locally headquartered company a permanent on-port leasehold.





Sol is a Pompano Beach, Fla.-based corporation that owns and operates refrigerated warehouse facilities totaling 140,000 square feet on 15 acres of land. They specialize in importing melons from Central America.









Sol, which has seasonally operated at another port terminal, has 150 employees and 140,000 square feet of refrigerated warehouses on 15 acres of land in Pompano Beach, where it is headquartered. It is especially known for importing melons from Central America.

Mango volume shipped last week was approximately 1,162,563 boxes representing 5% more than the previous week.



Ecuador

Ecuador shipped approximately 826,800 boxes last week representing 13% less than the previous week.

Tommy Atkins weekly average price per box at the Philadelphia entry port on week ending 12/15/2012 decreased by 10%. 

Tommy Atkins weekly average price per box at the Southern California entry port on week ending 12/15/2012 increased by 1%.


Tommy Atkins weekly average price per box at the South Florida entry port on week ending 12/15/2012 decreased by 6%.

Projections for the next two weeks are 550,000 and 450,000 boxes respectively.

El Valle do São Francisco debe exportar la mayor parte de la producción





Las exportaciones de la cosecha de mango pueden ganar peso en 2013. Las altas expectativas provienen de la mayor productora y exportadora del país, la Agropecuária Roriz Dantas (Agrodan) - instalada en el municipio de Belém do São Francisco (Brasil). La proyección es que sean producidas 25.000 toneladas de fruta ante las 20.000 registradas este año. 





De acuerdo con el director Comercial de la Productora y Exportadora, Paulo Roriz Dantas, esto es posible gracias a la adquisición de una máquina electrónica de clasificación de frutas y el primer robot en la línea de producción, así como la ampliación de las instalaciones. Como resultado, la capacidad de embalaje se triplicaría el próximo año, procesando 45 toneladas de fruta por hora. EL 20% del volumen se exporta a Europa y el 14% a otros países.

Hay plazo hasta el 31 de enero de 2013









Si bien la Food and Drug Administration (FDA) de EE.UU extendió el plazo para renovar los registros de establecimientos que producen, procesan, empacan o almacenan alimentos hasta el 31 de enero de 2013, la United Fresh Produce Association ha indicado que esto no es excusa para no llenar los papeles requeridos con tiempo.                              










David Gombas, vicepresidente de seguridad alimentaria y tecnología de United Fresh hizo un llamado a importadores y proveedores extranjeros a asegurarse de que cumplan con los nuevos requerimientos bajo la Ley de Modernización de Seguridad Alimentaria (FSMA).




Las inscripciones pueden realizarse en el sitio web de la FDA.








“En primer lugar, no es una prolongación del periodo. Lo que han dicho es que no van a ejecutarla durante otro mes, bajo lo que se denomina discretionary enforcement”, comentó Gombas a www.portalfruticola.com.
