TRINIDAD & TOBAGO : NATIVITY SCENE GROWS IN A MANGO TREE ...

A Creche in a mango tree!

Wednesday, December 25 2013

Christmas lights and glowing statues of Baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph are perched in an unusual place — 20 feet up a mango tree located in Victoria Gardens in Diego Martin.

E Norbert Ferreira told Newsday he had originally built the platform between two branches of the 60-70 feet tall “Mango Juan-Manuel” tree in his yard in order to reach the fruit at the top. The platform includes a “broadwalk” connected to the roof of the house, and enables a person to walk around the tree. The platform and broadwalk spans a total of 40 feet.

Ferreira named the fruit after his grandfathers João (John, or Juan in Spanish) Ferreira and Manuel Vasconcellos de Souza.

Because no one seemed to be able to identify the type of mango, it was considered a new variety, possibly a natural mutation, and so Ferreira named it.

“Having done that I called the platform Fort Juan-Manuel. It’s my favourite little spot in the house. My hang-out,” said Ferreira.

He then decided to make it into a tree house for his three grandchildren, Joshua, nine, Gianna, seven, and Hunter 1½ .

At the moment, the house is only a frame but eventually he hopes to build walls, a roof and a door, and make it more secure for them to play.

“It is a work in progress. Just something for the grandchildren to play on to get them away from the computer, and give them some boy days that I had,” he said.

“Since the frame was already in place, I decided to decorate it with lights for Christmas. When I put the lights, it looked nice so I decided to put some lit statues, and it had a very nice effect,”
he added.

THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER MANGOES IN THE WORLD ....

While "Flavor" is very subjective, and each country that grows mangoes is very nationalistic, these are the mango varieties that are the most sought after around the world because of sweetnesss (Brix) and demand.

The Chaunsa has a Brix rating in the 22 degree level which is unheard of!
Carabao claims to be the sweetest mango in the world and was able to register this in the Guiness book of world records.
Perhaps it is time for a GLOBAL taste test ???

INDIA 2016 : Mango production in state likely to take a hit this year

TNN | May 22, 2016, 12.32 PM IST

Mangaluru: Vagaries of nature is expected to take a toll on the production of King of Fruits - Mango - in Karnataka this year. A combination of failure of pre-monsoon showers at the flowering and growth stage and spike in temperature in mango growing belt of the state is expected to limit the total production of mango to an estimated 12 lakh tonnes in the current season as against 14 lakh tonnes in the last calendar year.

However, the good news for fruit lovers is that this could see price of mangoes across varieties decrease marginally by 2-3%. This is mainly on account of 'import' of the fruit from other mango-growing states in India, said M Kamalakshi Rajanna, chairperson, Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Ltd.

Karnataka is the third largest mango-growing state in India after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
