Hapag-Lloyd-Hamburg Sud Merger Faces Hurdles ...

JOC Staff | Dec 31, 2012 8:19AM EST

The planned merger between Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg-Sud is long overdue, but the outcome of negotiations is far from certain, according to industry analyst Alphaliner.

The Hamburg-based carriers resume negotiations, which started in the summer, in the new year with the aim of reaching agreement by the end of the first quarter of 2013.

A merger creating the world’s fourth largest ocean carrier is a “natural” fit, as their liner networks are highly complementary, with Hapag-Lloyd focusing primarily on the east-west routes while Hamburg Sud operates mainly on Latin American and Australasia related trades, Alphaliner noted.

A merged carrier would have a strong presence across all main trade lanes, especially on Latin American routes, where it would have 36 percent of the capacity on the trade, according to Alphaliner.

But the last two sets of merger negotiations, in 1997 and 2004, floundered due to differences over ownership and shareholder control.

2013: WALMART WILL CONTINUE TO EMPHASIZE SUSTAINABILITY ...

Looking ahead to a new year of sustainable living By  on January 2, 2013 Leave a comment

Though this time of year is traditionally one for making New Year’s resolutions to improve ourselves, it’s also a good opportunity to think about our accomplishments over the past year. Last January, we started the Green Room as a way to not only share the progress we’re making in sustainability but also to create a place for our readers to learn more about the latest trends in the space.

We’ve worked hard over the past year to write posts that we think you’ll enjoy – ones that bring you a bit of extra knowledge about the environment, as well as tips to help you live more sustainably at work and at home.

Here are the most popular posts for 2012:

THE ECONOMIST: GOVERNANCE BY PARALYSIS ...

For the past three years, American politicians have sneered at the inability of their European counterparts to deal with the euro crisis.

But this week's deal in Washington to avoid driving America's economy over the "fiscal cliff" looks all too European: a last-minute, short-term fix, driven by dysfunctional politics, that does little to tackle the fundamental problems and sets the stage for more crises.

Our cover leader argues that Barack Obama and his Republican opponents are building Brussels on the Potomac..

Predictions: 10 Healthiest Housing Markets of 2013

 January 2, 2013 12:12 PM |

In real estate, as you might have heard, location is everything.

It’s relatively straightforward to figure out which neighborhood in a particular town is the right location, location, location for your needs - schools, character, proximity to amenities and things like crime rates and commutability render a given neighborhood more or less of a good fit for a given home owner.

But how can you tell which cities you should feel optimistic about in the coming year?

It’s all about the fundamentals, folks.

I sat down with Trulia’s Economist, Jed Kolko, and asked him for his short list of spots across the country that he projects will be the healthiest housing markets in 2013, and for his rationale behind picking the cities that made the list. Kolko explained: “The healthy markets that made the list have strong job growth (Bureau of Labor Statistics), which bodes well for housing demand; low vacancy rates (U.S. Posta…

VENEZUELA FLEXES MUSCLE WITHIN MERCOSUR ...

Venezuela intent on freezing out Paraguay

Caracas, Venezuela (UPI) Jan 2, 2012

disclaimer: image is for illustration purposes only

Latin America's Mercosur trade bloc is facing renewed internal squabbles as plans for consolidation and expansion are clouded by the aftermath of last year's fractious admission of Venezuela as full member and suspension of founding member Paraguay.

In the latest twist to continued in-fighting Venezuela embraced more Mercosur instruments of multilateral collaboration but openly excluded Paraguay from the latest set of regional accords incorporating Caracas and founding members Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.

Divisions within the organization have turned Mercosur into a shadow of its former self, with its long-awaited agreements with the European Union nowhere near final negotiation and quarrels over Paraguay's exclusion taking up most of the pact's conference time.

Paraguay was suspended from Mercosur when the country's senate …

PHILIPPINES: NNC launches Mango Diez ...

By Jorie C. Valcorza

Thursday 3rd of January 2013

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Jan 3 (PIA) -- The Media Advocates for Nutrition in Governance (Mango) in Region 10 was formally launched by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) during its regional nutrition awarding ceremony in Cagayan de Oro City last month.

This new media group that will partner with government in addressing significant nutritional problems is dubbed “Mango Diez.”

Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, Zenaida T. Tondares, said this is the first media group formed under NNC in the country.

Acknowledging the vital role they play in its drive towards decreasing malnutrition, Tondares is eager to work hand in hand with them in the activities that the regional nutrition council have lined up for the year. “I want them to see what the council has been doing and personally visit some areas during our regular review and evaluation of the local government's nutrition plan implementation,” she added.

Tondares shared that this will a…
