TONY EASTLEY: Darwin, we're often reminded, is on the doorstep of Asia. When local mango growers up here want to get their produce to the Asian market, they have to send most of it all the way south to cities like Brisbane and Sydney where it connects with flights overseas.

Sara Everingham reports from Darwin.

SARA EVERINGHAM: About an hour's drive south of Darwin is a large mango farm. It's part of the Harvest company - a big supplier of Calypso mangoes to consumers all around the country.

(Sound of tractor)

SARA EVERINGHAM: Most of the mangoes from this region will be sold within Australia but Robert Gray from the Harvest Company thinks there's great potential to increase exports.

ROBERT GRAY: The Northern Territory not only produces good quality mangoes; it produces them a time of year when they'…

The Rich See a Different Internet Than the Poor ...

Ninety-nine percent of us live on the wrong side of a one-way mirror

By Michael Fertik

Imagine an Internet where unseen hands curate your entire experience. Where third parties predetermine the news, products and prices you see—even the people you meet. A world where you think you are making choices, but in reality, your options are narrowed and refined until you are left with merely the illusion of control.

This is not far from what is happening today. Thanks to technology that enables Google, Facebook and others to gather information about us and use it to tailor the user experience to our own personal tastes, habits and income, the Internet has become a different place for the rich and for the poor. Most of us have become unwitting actors in an unfolding drama about the tale of two Internets. There is yours and mine, theirs and ours.

Here's how it works.

Advertising currently drives the vast majority of the Internet industry by volume of revenue.

¡Inaudito!

Four reasons why people believe in conspiracy theories

By Andrew Nusca | September 10, 2009, 10:22 AM PDT

IMO NOTE:
Did the National Mango Board interfere in the Daniella Mango recall investigation?

Does EMEX really have a food safety response to the Daniella mango recall in place for the 2013 mango season?

Did NASA really land on the moon?

Did the government cover-up involvement in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks?

Is Elvis still alive and kicking? What about Michael Jackson?

Was John F. Kennedy assassinated at the hands of multiple shooters?

Do the Freemasons control the United States?

A small but fervent group of people believe there was more than included in historical record about the aforementioned events. Conspiracies, they call them. And every generation has its own.

Some of them turn about to be true, after all: Pearl Harbor was a Japanese conspiracy and Nixon’s Watergate break-in was a coverup.

But with so few that turn out to be true, why do people believe in conspiracies?

A new article in Scientific American tries to figure that out. …

INDIA: Mango hub at Dhenkanal ...

TNN Feb 15, 2013, 12.43AM IST

BHUBANESWAR: The state government has decided to put the proposed fruit and vegetable hub project at Dhenkanal on fast track.

The project plan includes sorting, grading and purchasing of mangoes for domestic market from the ensuing harvest season, a government statement said.

The matter came up for discussion during the executive council meeting of Odisha Horticulture Development Committee, chaired by chief secretary B K Patnaik.

The government has already identified five acre of land for the project, mainly to create amango hub eyeing the huge production in Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh and Keonjhar. These four districts produced 1,32,146 metric tonne (MT) mangoes last year, which was 20% of state's total production.

A detailed project report has also been prepared.

The project will work as an autonomous organization storing, grading and marketing mangoes.

Since mango is a seasonal fruit, there are plans to store and market banana, water melon, tomato, cauli…

AUSTRALIA: Mango growers want new varieties now ...

By Carmen Brown and Matt Brann

Wednesday, 20/02/2013

Mango growers say they are frustrated that new varieties have not been made available to the industry.

Three new varieties, which promise to look and taste better, have been developed through the National Mango Breeding Program (NMBP), and once released, could help growers develop new export markets.

Katherine mango producer Mitchell Curtis, says releasing the varieties has been delayed and growers are not happy.

"The growers are upset and frustrated about it, solely because we see a good product and they can't get it to the point where they can release it," he said.

"I think the frustration is that we have already tasted it eight years ago and still we can't put it in the ground."

The Australian Mango Industry Association (AMIA) is meeting in Brisbane this week and has been discussing the release of the new mango varieties.

President of the AMIA, Gavin Scurr, says he's hopeful the varieties will be released …
