You know your plums and pears, sure. But what about pomelos, pawpaws, and gacs?

I’ve never met a fruit I didn’t like. Seriously. Grapes, bananas, apples--all friends of mine. Even you, honeydew. But what about the fruits that exist beyond the orderly, hand-piled troughs of the supermarket? What are those exotic fruits like? From the looks of things, they’re pretty tasty too.

MAMADURO EL BABOSO : La contraofensiva chavista ....

01 junio 2013

CHANGING BAD HABITS: Now, INDIA promotes ethylene for mango ripening rather than carbide ...

Yagnesh Mehta, TNN | Jun 1, 2013, 11.12 PM IST

SURAT: A mechanical engineer from Valsad shows a safe way to ripen mangoes even as the authorities across the state are working hard to stop the use of carbide powder for this byunscrupulous people.

"Use of ethylene for ripening mango is legal and the product is acceptable even in foreign markets. Ethylene is not harmful as compared to carbide powder," said Nirav Desai, who exported 10,000 dozen of alphonso mangoes in Europe in 2012, which were harvested from his farm. He also exported around 40,000 dozen alphonso through his agents to other countries.

Ethylene is a hydrocarbon with a faint "sweet and musky" odor and is known to be used even in ancient times to stimulate ripening.

Desai is helping other farmers too in Valsad district to ripen their mangoes with ethylene. "Ethylene helps improve quality of the product and has no ill effects. Mango ripened with ethylene assures that their degree is same. This helps in p…

LOCURA !!!

by @DolarToday - June 1, 2013

MANGO MAVEN COMPLIMENTS COSTCO ON A JOB WELL DONE BY MANGO SHIPPER ...

Costco Gets Mango Labeling Just Right!!!

in RETAILER KUDOS

X

In an earlier post, I praised Whole Foods for an instance of superb mango labeling; now I must also give similar praise to Costco!

Beautiful Box of Costco Kent Mangoes

As a quick backgrounder on the issue, I am an advocate of more thorough labeling of mangoes in supermarkets.

 This is because:

 1) There is a great difference in taste and quality between different varieties of mangoes

 and

2) Some mango varieties can be difficult to discern from one another. Essentially, many consumers have a hard time selecting a good mango.

In a perfect mango world, the stickers on mangoes would indicate the VARIETY.

That way, consumers would merely have to learn the name of the tasty varieties and then when at the supermarket, avoid the rest.

In most of the stores I visit, mango labeling is not helpful to buyers.

So today, Costco gets its own set of labeling points. Here’s what went down at my location. Cos…

DID YOU KNOW ???: Spanish has more native speakers than any language other than Mandarin....

The rise of Spanish
Hats off

Yet its success could not have been foreseen

Jun 1st 2013 |From the print edition

The Story of Spanish. By Jean-Benoît Nadeau and Julie Barlow. St Martin’s Press; 496 pages; $27.99.

THE Iberian peninsula was conquered and settled many times, but only one of those conquests was a long-term linguistic success.

The languages of the Celts and the Iberians left little mark on Spain.

The Phoenicians were no more successful, although they bequeathed a memorable nickname to posterity: I-shepan-ha, “land of hyraxes” (more familiar as Hispania).

The Romans had better luck. Their soldiers’ and settlers’ vulgar Latin (always distinct from the written, classical kind) spread to the masses.

The overrunning of Spain by Germanic-speaking Goths failed to root out that rustic Latin. Nor did the long-term Muslim conquest of “al-Andalus”, beginning in 711 and continuing until the fall of Granada to Christian monarchs in 1492.

Arabic gave many words to the local Castilian, but neve…

2013 MANGO SEASON IN SOUTH FLORIDA

Mango trees are the star of a Davie garden filled with fruit trees

Karim Rossy started with one or two mango trees in his Davie backyard several years ago. Here is an overview of his backyard garden. Thursday May 16, 2013. WALTER MICHOT

GROW YOUR OWN

Karim Rossy raises 18 mango trees representing 17 cultivars in his Davie garden. Here are some of his tips for getting the most from your mango trees:

Do it now: A three-gallon grafted mango tree can take three to five years before it bears fruit, so plant it now. “We’re all getting older. Don’t procrastinate,” says Rossy.

Location, location, location: A mango tree needs sun for flowering and fruit set. “As long as there’s at least some sun for photosynthesis, the tree will probably do well,” says Rossy. Think before planting a mango near a patio or driveway where dropping fruit can be a problem, or near a sidewalk, street or fence where you could lose a lot of your crop to passersby. Also consider how much space you have before choosing a la…
