Portugal, Western Europe's poorest country in per capita terms, is now getting from former colonies like Angola and Brazil what amounts to a lifeline for its flat-lining economy.

Awash with cash and in much better shape than Portugal, oil-rich Angola and emerging giant Brazil are investing heavily here, increasing imports of Portuguese products, and welcoming companies and unemployed professional immigrants from their former colonial master.

GMO MANGOES : Philippines has been working on it since 2000 ...

The genetic engineering used in modifying mangoes is extremely similar to that of the papaya.

This is because both mangoes and papayas posses the ACC (ACS2) gene.

This gene is responsible for producing ethylene and the influence of ethylene on the fruit is that it controls the ripening and senescence after the fruit has been picked.

The main purpose of this genetic modifying is to reduce the amount of ethylene produced and to lengthen the onset of this gas.

Scientist extract this gene from ripe mango var 'Caraboa' and after they separate the gene it is then cloned and sequenced. They can then insert the isolated gene back in the genome and it will act as a disturbance to the enzyme calling for more ethylene to be produced.

Alternately, an ACC deaminase gene is inserted and its function is to convert ACC into a different substance which results in less ethylene being produced.

Since genetically modified mangoes are on the market, scientists are free to explore other more effic…

SADA rolls out mango seedlings in Kete-Krachi

The Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) has rolled out several hundred of mango seedlings for the people of the Krachi West District in the Volta Region.

The project, which was in collaboration with a SADA Technical Service Provider, Richie Plantations, aims at leveraging farming activities of families through the private sector in the Krachi catchment area.

Launching the project in Kete-Krachi, the Volta Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, reiterated the relevance of the SADA initiative, adding that, since the inception of the authority, several communities under the Savannah Ecological Zone (SEZ) have benefitted tremendously in agricultural activities. Nii Afotey-Agbo urged farmers in the Krachi communities to own the mango projects thereby improving their socio-economic status.

Barely two years into its operations, SADA through its service providers, offered various agricultural services in the form of tractor services…

ARE BRAZIL MANGOES GMO ??? ...

Editorial: Explanation needed for find in field of GMO wheat

The Japanese love mangoes; they bought $1.5 billion worth from Brazil alone during the last six months of 2012.

They also love the soft white wheat grown in the Northwest. They have traditionally been the largest buyers, although last year they were overtaken by the South Koreans. Those two nations account for one-half of the $1 billion-plus sales of Washington wheat last year.

But the Japanese are not buying now. Nor are the Koreans. The discovery of genetically modified wheat in a single field in eastern Oregon has cut Northwest farmers off from much of the export market where they sell 90 percent of their crop.

Prices traditionally fall this time of year, but the trend has been worse than usual because many buyers are on the sideline.

So, what do mangoes grown in Brazil have to do with soft white wheat grown on the Palouse?

Those mangoes may have been genetically modified, but that has not put off Japane…
