Peru: Mango production increases by 46% in the 2012-2013 season

Peru's mangoes for export production amounted to 105,000 tonnes in the 2012-2013 season, 46 percent more than in the previous season and 19 percent less compared to the prior, reported the Peruvian Association of Mango Exporters (APEM).

"The production of mango doesn't increase steadily, it has variations. Mango is a seasonal fruit that depends on the weather each year. If it's favourable, there will be production, otherwise, there won't be such a good production," said APEM's general manager, Juan Carlos Rivera.

He added that weather conditions such as the cold Winter and the lack of early rains in Summer had contributed to the increase in production in the last season.

There are 22,500 planted hectares of mangoes for export and no intention of planting more, as there was five or six years ago, because producers are now focusing on the quality and performance of their current production.

Bountiful Mexican supplies are helping retailers promote mangoes.

Supermarkets should expect Mexico to continue shipping strong supplies to the U.S. through Labor Day as Brazilian production begins to ramp up, importers say.


Mexican mangoes are in big supply and making for many retail promotions in early and mid-August. 

Supermarkets should expect Mexico to ship through mid-September as Brazilian production begins to ramp up in September, importers say.

Because of the heavy volume, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is reporting low late summer prices.

Mexico is in its peak and has been shipping more than 3 million boxes a week, said Greg Golden, partner and sales manager of Amazon Produce Network, Mullica Hill, N.J.

The high volume prompted lower prices but made for strong promotions, he said.
