The economist who predicted the financial crisis just sounded another alarm—it would be wise to listen this time

By Manuel Hinds September 22, 2013
Manuel Hinds is El Salvador's former finance minister. He also has worked with the World Bank in the public and private sector. In 2010, he won the Manhattan Institute's Hayek Prize.

Raghuram Rajan, left, was not afraid to take on Alan Greenspan. And now, he's sounding another clarion call as India's new central banker. Reuters/Danish Siddiqui

In his first official act as the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Raghuram Rajan raised the benchmark interest rate from 7.25 to 7.5%, causing a ripple of surprise in financial circles and eliciting protests from various business representatives.

But for people who know the current condition of emerging markets and Rajan’s professional trajectory, this was not surprising, at all.

Rajan has no qualms about staging such challenges. In 2005, Rajan was chief economist of the International Monetary Fund and attended the top central bankers’ get together in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to prese…

"The Girl from Ipanema" ("Garota de Ipanema") written in 1962 by Antonio Carlos Jobim with lyrics in Portuguese by Vinicius de Moraes and in English by Norman Gimbel was recorded by Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto and Stan Getz, in March 1963 as part of the album Getz/Gilberto, released March 1964 on the Verve label. It was released as a single, reaching number one on the Pop Standard chart and was named Record of the Year in 1965.

The album won the 1965 Grammy Awards for Best Album of the Year, Best Jazz Instrumental Album - Individual or Group and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The personel are Stan Getz - tenor saxophone, João Gilberto - guitar, vocals, Astrud Gilberto -- vocals, Antonio Carlos Jobim - piano, Sebastião Neto -- bass, and Milton Banana - drums.

The version presented here is the long one from the album and is, in my opinion, superior to the shortened one which received a great deal of play on the radio during the summe…

For nearly three decades, Broome has taken a mouth-watering bite into one of the juiciest events in the Kimberley social calendar, the Broome Mango Festival.

The festival is hosted by the Lions Club of Broome and celebrates the exotic fruit with a plethora of events.

This year, locals will sink their teeth into another slice of mango fever when the festival returns to mark its 27th anniversary, running from November 21 to 24.

The festival's signature events, the Great Chefs of Broome and the Great Bartenders of Broome, will be back along with mango tasting, a mango quiz night, mango jams, cakes and chutneys.

Last year, organisers launched the White Ribbon Day Gala and Charity Auction, raising more than $17,000 for various local organisations involved with prevention of family violence. The glitzy event will be held again.

Nairobi Terror Attack Rekindles Interest In 'The White Widow', The Most Wanted Woman In The World

SEP. 23, 2013, 11:41 AM

Following the Westgate Mall Attack, media focus has turned in part to a British woman named Samantha Lewthwaite, nicknamed "The White Widow."

Lewthewaite was the wife of suicide bomber Germaine Lindsay, a man who blew himself up on July 7, 2005, at London's King’s Cross subway station killing 26 people — an attack now known as "7/7."

Lewthwaite initially denounced the attack, but then she and her two children disappeared from the U.K. She next surfaced in 2011 when Kenyan counterterrorism investigators tracked her down to an apartment in Mombasa, Kenya.

They reportedly found similar chemicals in that apartment as were used in the 7/7 attack, reports Mike Pflanzof The Telegraph.

Pflanz writes that her mystique has only grown since then:

She has been accused variously of being al-Qaeda’s chief financier in the region, funding the recruitment and smuggling of Muslim youth to terror training camps in Somalia, and coaching…

The Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, which is supported by the Federalist Society, has released a study showing that stringent gun control laws do not decrease the murder rate.

According to the Examiner, "They found that a country like Luxenbourg, which bans all guns has a murder rate that is 9 times higher than Germany, where there are 30,000 guns per 100,000 people. They also cited a study by the U.S.National Academy of Sciences, which studied 253 journal articles, 99 books, 43 government publications, and it failed to find one gun control initiative that worked."

"In fact, in many cases it found that violence is very often lower, where guns are more readily available. The report points to a myth that guns are more easily obtained in the United States than in Europe. That is factually incorrect. "

Are you surprised by the journal's finding that strict gun control laws do not save lives?…

Pioneering ‘Honey Mango’ development by UNIVEG Katopé UK

UNIVEG Katopé UK has been developing the sourcing of speciality mangoes for its customers.

These types of mango are often described as deeply fragrant and aromatic, typically possessing sweet, golden coloured flesh.

As part of this development the tropical team of Julie Criddle and Kathryn Vincent were asked by one of our retail customers to develop a supply source of Pakistani mangoes.

The ultimate aim was to provide UK consumers with the opportunity to buy traditional mango varieties from Pakistan.

As a part of this programme UNIVEG Katopé UK Technical Manager David Maris visited the production regions and producers in Pakistan to get a better understanding of the production and local infrastructure.

UNIVEG is working directly with two producer groups based in the southern Sindh and central Punjab regions. These regions offer mango availability from May through to Sept. The producer groups are the only GLOBALGAP certified mango growers within the country.

This season all fruit was ai…

Hong Kong Maintains Storm Signal as Usagi Reaches China

September 23, 2013 - Hong Kong maintained its third-highest storm signal, with the city braced for floods and hundreds of flights canceled, after Usagi made landfall as a severe typhoon in southern China.

The Hong Kong Observatory repeated the No. 8 Storm Signal at 4 a.m. local time, meaning winds of at least 63 kilometers (39 miles) an hour are expected, while downgrading Usagi to a tropical cyclone as it moves gradually away from the city.

Thousands of people were evacuated by the Chinese government from coastal areas in Fujian province as storms knocked out power lines, while travelers were stranded aroundthe region with more than 440 flights affected at Hong Kong airport. Banks and the Hong Kong stock market will be closed in the morning should Signal 8 remain in force past 9 a.m.

"It's probably the worst weekend ever," Jessica Coelho, a Hong Kong-based human resources executive who was stranded in Singapore, said by telephone yesterday. "It's a nightmare tryin…
