LA IMAGEN DE MADURO FRENTE AL MUNDO ...

RUSSIA HAS TAKEN OVER CRIMEAN PENINSULA

Curious how Ukraine, which with its population of 44 million and size of 603,628 square km makes it the largest single country entirely in Europe, stacks up against Russia?

The following infographic should answer some questions regarding the (im)balance of power.

And as a follow up, here is a map showing the location of the various sites of the Russian Navy in the Crimea.

These will be the first sites to see a surge in Russian troop presence.

Sinaloa Cartel Succession in Mexico: More Political Intrigue than Violence

Young 'Chapo' vs old 'Chapo' photo analysis by Mexico govt

Succession in the Sinaloa Cartel does not necessarily mean more violence.

Indeed, the arrest of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman could present more problems for his political and business accomplices than within his own criminal organization.

Beyond the names being mentioned as new heads of the cartel (such as Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada and Damaso Lopez, alias "El Mini Lic"), it is important to keep in mind that succession in the underworld depends on the way an organization is structured.

The Sinaloa Cartel is, first and foremost, a confederation of criminal organizations based on regional culture, and deep, shared blood ties that have been generated during decades of endogenous practice. Its top leadership is firm but horizontal in nature; it works as a sort of "board of directors."

ORGANIZED CRIME : USA State Department Report Highlights Impact of Corruption in Latin America

Written by Mimi Yagoub

Ex-Bogota Mayor Samuel Moreno is on trial for corruption

The US State Department's annual Human Rights report highlights how in Latin America deeply ingrained corruption fuelled by organized crime has gravely compromised state institutions around the region.

The 2014 Human Rights Practices report emphasizes the impact of corruption in most Latin American countries, but in particular in countries where organized crime has a strong presence such as Mexico, Guatemala and Colombia.

In Mexico, corruption can range from passing petty bribes to security forces to large-scale, sophisticated corruption networks, including the illegal sponsoring of politicians, the report notes. Local security forces are particularly vulnerable to infiltration by organized crime, with many actively participating in drug trafficking, kidnapping and extortion.

According to the State Department, Guatemala sees chronic corruption across its administrative, justice and s…

MEXICO CITY — Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto says his investigators aim to roll up the political and financial network that has protected and enriched arrested crime lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

“We’re going after everything,”
Peña Nieto told journalist Leon Krause in an interview for Fusion, the US English-language TV network aimed at Latinos.

“Private sector agents, public agents here and in the United States and anywhere else in the world. I think he will offer a lot to talk about and to act on in the coming months,” he said.

If the Mexican president follows through on his vow, his agents might work from a detailed roadmap provided by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Asset Control, or O…

Maersk Line Profit Drops as Rates to Ship Containers Fall to Historic Lows

BY BLOOMBERG

ON FEBRUARY 27, 2014

Feb. 27 (Bloomberg) — A.P. Møller-Maersk A/S’s container- shipping line, the world’s largest, said fourth-quarter profit fell 6.6 percent as spending reductions weren’t able to counter a decline in freight rates.

Net income at Maersk Line dropped to $313 million from $335 million a year earlier, the Copenhagen-based company said today in a statement. Earnings before interest and taxes at parent company A.P. Møller-Maersk fell 5.9 percent to 9.46 billion kroner ($1.73 billion), missing the 10.6 billion-krone average of eight analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Maersk Line, which transports about 15 percent of the world’s containers, is battling industry overcapacity after a boom in ship orders collided with the global financial crisis, triggering the worst slump in prices for carrying cargo since containerization became global in the 1970s. The company said today that overcapacity will depress freight rates in 2014 and that Maersk Line’s profit will a…

WASHINGTON, Feb 27 (Reuters) – Chilean shipping firm Compania Sudamericana de Vapores has agreed to plead guilty to a price-fixing conspiracy and pay an $8.9 million criminal fine to the U.S. government, the U.S. Justice Department said on Thursday.

The Justice Department’s antitrust prosecutors said in a statement that the company had conspired to rig bids to push up prices of shipping cargo such as cars and trucks to and from the United States.

“Today’s charges are the first to be filed in the Antitrust Division’s investigation into bid rigging and price fixing of ocean shipping services,”
said Bill Baer, assistant attorney general in charge of the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division.

Vapores, majority-owned by the billionaire Luksic family, Chile’s richest, has been seeking to battle steep losses caused by low freight rates, high fuel prices and expensive leases.

It recently announced a business tie-up with Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd that …
