Ecuador Takes Control of Ports

Presidential decree eliminates four port authorities






Ecuador has abolished four port authorities, which will now be administered by the Ministry of Transport & Public Works. 










The decree issued by Ecuador’s president, Rafael Correa, includes the port authorities of Esmeraldas, Guayaquil, Manta and Puerto Bolívar.





The move was made to end rivalries between the ports. The post of under-secretary for ports is to be created and four port managers appointed, Port Strategy said in a report.






Meanwhile, the government will consider establishing a public ports company to coordinate action between the ports. 




Each port would have a cargo specialty to eliminate competition.












The decree has received backlash from Jaime Nebot, the mayor of Guayaquil.






“The government owns land adjacent to the maritime port, which is needed for the expansion of the existing port,” Nebot said.
