Puerto Rico: Tropical Tax Haven for America's Super-Rich

http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-06-26/puerto-rico-tax-haven-for-americas-super-rich

By Katherine Burton June 26, 2014
(Corrects spelling of Kim Rueben's name in the 31st paragraph.)

It’s 2 a.m. at the La Factoria bar in Puerto Rico’s Old San Juan, a hipster joint with a sagging couch, tile floors, and Christmas lights that wouldn’t be out of place in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg. While Get Lucky plays, tipsy couples slink out the doors onto the colonial city’s cobblestone streets and into this warm April night.

At the bar, a 28-year-old hedge fund trader—the type of person who posts his SAT results on his LinkedIn page—is ranting about the tax code.

He’s obsessed with it, complaining that the U.S. is the only major country taxing citizens on their worldwide income, no matter where they reside. That’s why he moved here.

Struggling to emerge from an almost decadelong economic slump, the Puerto Rican government signed a law 18 months ago that creates a tax haven for U.S. citizens.

Iraqi Kurdistan's Immense Oil Wealth Means It Does Not Have To Answer To Baghdad

JEREMY BENDER

JUN. 25, 2014, 11:22 AM

Terrorists have taken over much of Iraq in recent weeks, leaving the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in the country's north perhaps the most stable place within Iraqi borders. But the jihadist blitz isn't the only thing moving the KRG out of Baghdad's orbit.

An oil pipeline running from the autonomous Kurdish region of Iraq to the Turkish port of Ceylan, coupled with Kurdistan's extensive oil reserves and its impressive military force, means that Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government is now almost entirely free of Baghdad.

Roughly a quarter of Iraq's oil lies within Iraqi Kurdistan — although this amount is thought to be significantly more now that the Kurds have de facto control over the oil and refinery rich city of Kirkuk.

Turkey estimates that anywhere from 100,000 to 120,000 barrels of oil a day flow into the country from Kurdistan.

About 2.3 million barrels of oil are being stored in Ceylan.

SUSTAINABILITY : The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Making Waves: Episode 126

An Ocean-Sized Problem

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is one of many areas in the ocean where marine debris naturally concentrates because of ocean currents.

In this episode, Dianna Parker from the NOAA Marine Debris Program explains what a garbage patch is and isn't, what we know and don't know, and what we can do about this ocean-sized problem.

What is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? What does it look like? Why can't we just clean it up?

Transcript :

This is Making Waves from NOAA's National Ocean Service. I'm Troy Kitch.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. I bet you've heard of it. It's a phrase that's really caught on in the past few years.

And it's easy to see why: it conjures up a powerful image ... a vast vortex of human waste — plastic bags, tires, cans, barrels, you name it ... floating out there in the ocean.

But here's the thing: it doesn't really look like that at all. What it looks like to the human eye, fro…

FOR THE LOVE OF MANGOES : A VISIT TO MERRIT ISLAND, FLORIDA WITH NORIS LEDESMA

Fruit hunting in Florida

By Noris Ledesma Curator Fairchild Botanical Gardens

I love Florida. Mangoes everywhere!
Today I am about a 4 hr drive from Miami in Merritt Island, Florid, located on the eastern Floridian coast.

Merritt island is bordered by the Indian and Banana rivers, and mango seedlings have been part of their life for more than a century.

Mango season in Merritt Island runs from June through mid-September, with different varieties ripening at different times.

As you are travelling along South Tropical Trail in Merritt Island, you will start to see hand-painted signs advertising mango s for sale.

This is a good way to learn about history of mangos, and enjoy the paradise!

Mango growers in Merritt Island refuse to use pesticides.

Their trees grow naturally, without irrigation, or excess of fertilizer.

They grow their local mangoes, and some of the favorite recognized mangoes in the island as Carrie, Haden, Jakarta, Kent, Valencia Pride, Springfiels and Osteen.
