AUSTRALIA : Customer collaboration key to Manbulloo mango success










Collaboration with partners in the supply chain, keeping the customer as the ‘centre of the universe’ and committing to a planned program and strategy have been key to a successful mango season for grower and marketer Manbulloo.




“last year the 2014/15 season was great. We’re very happy with the yield and the quality. We did some good collaborations with Coles and good collaboration with Chinese, Korean and Canadian customers.,” notes Marie Piccone, Managing Director of Manbulloo



There were also activities based around the lead up to Christmas and around the lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year, which has helped strengthen ties with customers and export partners, according to her. 










Although export was definitely on the agenda, and Manbulloo was involved in the consultation and development process around the mango industry’s expansion to the US market in early February this year, Ms Piccone says that managing existing commitments is paying off well for the business.
“We strive to have a planned program with our customers and our longer term relationships are top priority. We’re committed to innovation and growth with our customers,” she says.




 This also includes ensuring that Manbulloo’s customers, including Coles, receive mangoes that are attractive, ready for sale and have been handled and ripened with care. “Being closer to our partners, that’s what has been a milestone with us this season. That doesn’t come easily.”




New packaging innovations, and working ‘really closely’ with customers means that Manbulloo has been innovating according to what customers want, including packaging, presentation and taste preferences.




“We believe there’s opportunity for the mango industry as a whole and for us as a commercial company provided we continue to keep the customer at the centre of our strategies," says Ms Piccone.




The Mango season ended just before New Year for Manbulloo, a grower with a ‘very large’ plantation in the Northern Territory, and others in Northern Queensland.



 Harvest commenced in late September, and wrapped up in mid January having also sourced mangoes in Queensland from selected grower for export supply.





Weather was thankfully not too great an issue, although there are ‘always weather events’ to manage and sometimes to be concerned about, according to Ms Piccone.

Alphonso (हापुस Haapoos in Marathi, હાફુસ in Gujarati, ಆಪೂಸ್ Aapoos in Kannada) is a mango cultivar that is considered by many[who?] to be one of the best in terms of sweetness, richness and flavor.

Experts at the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany (BSIP) here have traced the origin of mango to the hills of Meghalaya, India from a 65 million year-old fossil of a mango leaf. 





The earlier fossil records of mango (Mangifera indica) from the Northeast and elsewhere were 25 to 30 million years old. The 'carbonized leaf fossil' from Damalgiri area of Meghalaya hills, believed to be a mango tree from the peninsular India, was found by Dr R. C. Mehrotra, senior scientist, BSIP and his colleagues. 




After careful analysis of the fossil of the mango leaf and leaves of modern plants, the BISP scientist found many of the fossil leaf characters to be similar to mangifera.


An extensive study of the anatomy and morphology of several modern-day species of the genus mangifera with the fossil samples had reinforced the concept that its centre of origin is Northeast India, from where it spread into neighbouring areas, says Dr. Mehrotra.

INDIA 2016 : Mango production in state likely to take a hit this year

Mangaluru: Vagaries of nature is expected to take a toll on the production of King of Fruits - Mango - in Karnataka this year. A combination of failure of pre-monsoon showers at the flowering and growth stage and spike in temperature in mango growing belt of the state is expected to limit the total production of mango to an estimated 12 lakh tonnes in the current season as against 14 lakh tonnes in the last calendar year.



However, the good news for fruit lovers is that this could see price of mangoes across varieties decrease marginally by 2-3%. This is mainly on account of 'import' of the fruit from other mango-growing states in India, said M Kamalakshi Rajanna, chairperson, Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Ltd.




Karnataka is the third largest mango-growing state in India after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
