AUSTRALIA : Mango growers Prep for more US exports

Mango growers in the Northern Territory and the rest of Australia are still processing the results of the 2014/15 season, but a visit from the two importers who handled the first shipments of Australian mangoes into the US in February has meant that preparations for the 2016 export season are well under way. 

“Training for pest monitoring for the upcoming 2015/16 season will start in July, and registrations with the Department of Agriculture for those growers looking to export next year will start in August,” says Michael Daysh, Market Development Officer with the Northern Territory Department of Primary Industries, and project leader on the first shipments that went to the US earlier this year.

By mid August, it should be clear which Northern Territory growers will be registering with the Government to export to the US, and in early September growers nationwide who will be exporting should be known.

Those growers looking to send mangoes to the US will need to be prepared, and show a commitment to strict standards. 

“Registration is for growers who are willing to make a commitment. It’s quite demanding with regards to pest control and monitoring, and there are different chemical requirements within the US,” notes Mr Daysh.

“That means growers interested will have to put aside some blocks focused on the US market.”

Representatives from the two importing companies attended the 10th Australian Mango Industry conference, and will be reporting back details of interested growers now that they have returned home, adds Mr Daysh. 
“The Australian-ness will resonate with US consumers, and that’s where growers will have a unique story to tell. Grower’s stories will be integrated underneath Team Australia Mangoes, details of the varieties, where the fruit came from and growing conditions.” 

The US market will be particularly receptive to You Tube videos from growers, and the idea of buying a ‘little piece of Aussie sunshine’ during the Northern winter months, according to him.

It’s a good thing that there seems to be a line up of interested growers, as Australian Mango Industry Association CEO Gavin Scurr set the ambitious target of exporting a million trays within five years during the conference. “It’s now about drawing a graph of the period between now and five years, and develop a comprehensive industry strategy to reach that target,” says Mr Daysh.

INDIA 2016 : Mango production in state likely to take a hit this year

Mangaluru: Vagaries of nature is expected to take a toll on the production of King of Fruits - Mango - in Karnataka this year. A combination of failure of pre-monsoon showers at the flowering and growth stage and spike in temperature in mango growing belt of the state is expected to limit the total production of mango to an estimated 12 lakh tonnes in the current season as against 14 lakh tonnes in the last calendar year.

However, the good news for fruit lovers is that this could see price of mangoes across varieties decrease marginally by 2-3%. This is mainly on account of 'import' of the fruit from other mango-growing states in India, said M Kamalakshi Rajanna, chairperson, Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Ltd.

Karnataka is the third largest mango-growing state in India after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Experts at the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany (BSIP) here have traced the origin of mango to the hills of Meghalaya, India from a 65 million year-old fossil of a mango leaf. 

The earlier fossil records of mango (Mangifera indica) from the Northeast and elsewhere were 25 to 30 million years old. The 'carbonized leaf fossil' from Damalgiri area of Meghalaya hills, believed to be a mango tree from the peninsular India, was found by Dr R. C. Mehrotra, senior scientist, BSIP and his colleagues. 

After careful analysis of the fossil of the mango leaf and leaves of modern plants, the BISP scientist found many of the fossil leaf characters to be similar to mangifera.

An extensive study of the anatomy and morphology of several modern-day species of the genus mangifera with the fossil samples had reinforced the concept that its centre of origin is Northeast India, from where it spread into neighbouring areas, says Dr. Mehrotra.
