Pakistani Mango attracts crowds at “Pakistani Mango – A Taste of Pakistan Exhibition” in Tokyo

Pakistani mangoes which enjoy unique position in the global market due to their exquisite taste, distinct flavour and sweetness, pulled crowds of mango lovers for the Mango Tasting Event at the Embassy of Pakistan in Japan.








As part of a series of events being organized for celebrating the arrival of King of Fruits- Royale Chaunsa, the Embassy of Pakistan in collaboration with FnF Pakistan organized a “Pakistani Mango –A Taste of Pakistan Event” in the Event Hall of the Embassy of Pakistan.







Japanese people belonging to different walks of life including Parliamentarians, diplomats, the media, businessmen and academia enjoyed the event and appreciated the quality and taste of mangoes in terms of its richness and uniqueness. 



The hall was thematically decorated to display mangoes and present for tasting as the hallmark of the event. 







Pakistani cuisine with not only fresh mangoes but also dishes including mango slices, ice creams, salads, sushi, cakes, curries, smoothies and milk shakes, etc were served to the visitors.




The Mango Mania 2015 in Japan started with a soft launching at the Maruetsu Lakeside store last week with simultaneous presentation of the Pakistani mangoes at AEON Stores all across Japan followed by the tasting event in the Embassy of Pakistan. Preparations are also going on for similar events in the Kansai region to strengthen the marketing efforts of the mission for enhancing mango exports to Japan.



Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Farukh Amil said, “Pakistan produces more than 50 varieties of mangoes with different aromas and tastes. Pakistan also produces other world class vegetables, fruits and cereals.” 



The Ambassador emphasized that whilst the arrival of the Pakistani mango in Japan was a welcome development, its greatest significance was that it highlighted that Pakistan was able to produce, package and present for the arguably sophisticated, high-end market of Japan, the one with the most stringent requirements in the world.



Lt Gen (R) Shafqat Ahmad Managing Director/CEO of FFC, Pakistan, thanked the Mission for its untiring efforts towards realizing this goal of marketing Pakistani mangoes to the largest retail chain store in Japan.



 He informed that with annual production of mangoes exceeding 1.5 million tons and demand growing around the world, the mango growers and the intermediary industries relating to mango has a big potential for growth in Japan, known for its appetite for world class quality fruits and food.

Mangaluru: Vagaries of nature is expected to take a toll on the production of King of Fruits - Mango - in Karnataka this year. A combination of failure of pre-monsoon showers at the flowering and growth stage and spike in temperature in mango growing belt of the state is expected to limit the total production of mango to an estimated 12 lakh tonnes in the current season as against 14 lakh tonnes in the last calendar year.



However, the good news for fruit lovers is that this could see price of mangoes across varieties decrease marginally by 2-3%. This is mainly on account of 'import' of the fruit from other mango-growing states in India, said M Kamalakshi Rajanna, chairperson, Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Ltd.




Karnataka is the third largest mango-growing state in India after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Experts at the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany (BSIP) here have traced the origin of mango to the hills of Meghalaya, India from a 65 million year-old fossil of a mango leaf. 





The earlier fossil records of mango (Mangifera indica) from the Northeast and elsewhere were 25 to 30 million years old. The 'carbonized leaf fossil' from Damalgiri area of Meghalaya hills, believed to be a mango tree from the peninsular India, was found by Dr R. C. Mehrotra, senior scientist, BSIP and his colleagues. 




After careful analysis of the fossil of the mango leaf and leaves of modern plants, the BISP scientist found many of the fossil leaf characters to be similar to mangifera.


An extensive study of the anatomy and morphology of several modern-day species of the genus mangifera with the fossil samples had reinforced the concept that its centre of origin is Northeast India, from where it spread into neighbouring areas, says Dr. Mehrotra.
